HEADMASTER'S WELCOME

Welcome to the Shiplake College website. I hope that you will enjoy browsing our site and discovering more about our inclusive, thriving community. We offer independent day and boarding education for boys aged 11 to 18 and girls aged 16 to 18.

Academic rigour remains vitally important in education, but as a reflection of the growing tendency of universities and employers to demand a wide range of skills and experiences, schools now have a greater responsibility than ever to focus on the overall development of their pupils. This philosophy is certainly embraced here at Shiplake. We pride ourselves on our ability to ‘add value’ to each pupil’s education. Boys and girls benefit from engaging teaching tailored to their individual needs, allowing them to improve significantly across their time at the school.

This added-value also extends to the vast number of co-curricular opportunities

offered to pupils, which help to instil and develop the skills required to enable young people to compete successfully in their chosen career. Shiplake leavers are invariably characterised by their social adeptness and rounded personalities which often leads them into people-facing roles.

Many of the College’s founding principles, established in 1959, remain the same. Our admissions policy aims to identify pupils with a variety of talents, who have the potential and attitude to make the most of the many opportunities we offer them. In other ways, of course, the College has evolved considerably. Modern technology is embraced by teaching staff and incorporated into lessons wherever possible to meet the learning preferences of 21st century teenagers.

I enjoy referring to the mantra that challenge creates character. At Shiplake, every day brings new challenges, encouraging pupils to take risks, try things and explore ideas. Well-accustomed to facing new situations, adapting accordingly and achieving success, pupils develop the resilience and confidence required to flourish and thrive in their adult lives.

I invite you to come and visit us, to see the College for yourself. We would all be delighted to welcome you.
