Why choose Shiplake?

Shiplake is not just a place to learn, it is a place to live: a vibrant and busy community with a mixture of boarders and day pupils.

Although we do not select according to academic ability this does not mean that we are not selective. Rather, we assess each pupil on his or her potential to make the most of the opportunities that Shiplake can offer and we look at the value we can add to their education. We are proud of our excellent value-added results. With small classes and dedicated teaching staff, each pupil is supported and stretched according to need and ability.

And when we talk about teaching and learning we don’t just mean in the classroom. Leadership skills, teamwork and confidence are discovered through our extensive programme of sports and activities. We think you’ll find something for everyone, from the Duke of Edinburgh Award to the Mad Dogs Theatre Company.

At Shiplake we are inclusive and there is an opportunity for all to join in and try new things. We respect that everyone is different and the College is small enough to ensure that each individual is known to his or her peers and staff. Everyone is encouraged to take risks, try activities, explore new ideas and take responsibility. We firmly believe ‘nothing ventured, nothing gained’!

We are proud of what our pupils achieve – and so are they!

“If you had said three years ago when I started at Shiplake, that I would be aiming for Grades A or A* in some of my GCSE subjects, I would not have believed you!  Come to think of it, I don’t think my parents would have believed you either!  The fact that I am, I believe, is due to the attention and encouragement I have received at Shiplake!” Quote from pupil.
