Teaching and Learning

At Shiplake teaching and learning concentrates on delivering excellent teaching through small classes and individual attention with a supportive but stimulating environment. Pupils have time to understand and explore their subjects thoroughly and the opportunity to ask questions and discuss interesting issues. Most pupils focus on nine GCSE subjects followed by 4 AS levels and then 3A2’s. Small classes and dedicated teaching staff make for a tailored academic experience.

To ensure best practice throughout the school our Head of Teaching and Learning, Dr Toby Purser, co-ordinates this vital area across the curriculum. Innovative teaching includes an open door policy between departments to share best practice, team-teaching within departments, peer assessment amongst pupils and lively debate within the common room. In this way pupils are able to take ownership of their own learning and make outstanding progress as a result. Our academic value-added results demonstrate the success of this approach.

In Year 9 all subjects are compulsory and the weekly timetable includes English, Mathematics, Science, History, Geography, Language, Music, Art and Design, Design and Technology, Information Communication Technology, Physical Education, Drama, Religious Education and PSE.

In Years 10 and 11 pupils choose three options in addition to the compulsory GCSE courses of English, Mathematics, Science, a Modern Language and PSE/Citizenship.

Special arrangements are made for those who require support from the Learning Development Department.
