Reading University Head Saturday 25thFebruary
After the bitterly cold conditions of Hampton it made for a pleasant change to be racing at Reading University Head that felt almost like Spring had arrived.
In total Shiplake sent 6 Eights to race against a large field of school crews that will form the basis of our opposition for much of this season. The J15s despite having stepped up their performance in training will not be entirely happy with their results. That said with the top 2 crews being within 3 seconds it does suggest that there is real strength in depth and with ongoing further selection I am sure this group will achieve the results they are more than capable of. Special mention should go to the J15 C Eight with as Mr Jones commented ‘he was more than pleased with their approach and performance at Reading’.
The Senior B Squad made up of rowers from Years 11-13 put out an Eight into the Novice category and although they had an eventful race they beat a number of Universities.
The Senior A Squad will have been disappointed with their results although I know this will only further strengthen their drive to achieve. The next race for the 1st and 2nd Eight will be at Hammersmith Head on Sunday and with many of the same crews also racing we hope for a better set of results.
The J14s also had a good weekend racing against local rivals Reading Blue Coat and they will be encouraged by beating their respective top crew. More importantly it was great to see over 40 J14s racing at this event and I am sure this invaluable experience will be very beneficial for this group.
