Over 150 boys participate in cricket at some level at Shiplake College and the school fields 9 teams throughout the Summer term. Shiplake’s outstanding grounds are cared for by the award winning Richard Evans and his team of staff, who have twice collected the Independent Schools’ Groundstaff of the Year. Richard looks after 3 excellent squares, 8 grass nets and 4 artificial nets as well as indoor facilities which include four nets and a bowling machine which are used throughout the winter cricket programme.
The Cricket Club at Shiplake also has strong links with Performance Cricket and Henley CC, through our cricket professional Chris Ellison. Chris is one of a handful of ECB Level 4 coaches in the country and the boys have the opportunity to have Winter coaching with Chris from October each year. As well as Chris’ passion and expertise, a team of 15 coaches, who oversee the development of the Squads, also train throughout the Spring term as part of the minor activity programme, in preparation for the season ahead.
We play a strong fixture list against local schools throughout Oxfordshire and Berkshire with matches for the U14s, U15s and Seniors on Wednesday and Saturday and the U13 and U12s on Tuesday and Friday. In addition to the regular inter-school fixtures the U15s and U14s take part in the Taverner’s Cup Regional Competition enjoying good success. The 2013 fixture list included, for the first time in the school’s history, a 1stXI match against the MCC.
The club also takes a number of tours, with age groups often on a two year rotation. Easter 2012 saw the U16 squad travel to Dubai and Abu Dhabi to take part in the ARCH International Trophy. This was a great experience for those boys who will be pushing for 1stXI places in the next couple of years. In Easter 2014, the 1st XI will return to the Caribbean for an eight day tour of Antigua.
