We have lift off!
An exciting new co-curricular programme has launched this term, and is now in
full swing with pupils taking advantage of the new activities on offer on
Tuesday and Friday afternoons. In total, a whopping 22 clubs and activities
take place over the course of the two days.
The main crowd
pullers are The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme (40 Year 10 boys have signed
up for the bronze award) and our very own ‘Outdoor Experience’ which allows
pupils to try sailing, climbing, kayaking, archery and mountain biking. Head of
Outdoor Education Mr Steve Macpherson leads both of these activities and is
delighted with the enthusiasm and commitment shown so far this term.
Other popular
choices are the art and cookery classes. Budding chefs from the two sessions
are already planning a ‘Bake Off’ at the end of term. Invitations to Mary Berry
and Paul Hollywood will be posted shortly.
Continuing the
tradition of Sixth Form Ballroom Dancing, it is no surprise that over 50 pupils
have signed up this year. The group left their first session well versed in the
art of the tango, and are already looking forward to balls at local girls’
schools later in the year. Volunteering, Young Enterprise, Media Club, Chemistry
Club, Photoshop Club, Debating and Sound Recording are among the other
activities that are on offer.
Walking around the
school site on activity afternoons last week, the Headmaster commented that
there was a “real buzz” about the place. So keen was he to get involved that he
ended up dancing the cha-cha-cha with some of the year 12 boys.
Assistant Headmaster (Co-Curricular) Mr Nick Brown
commented: “We are delighted with the impact the new co-curricular programme
has had. With dedicated sessions in the timetable, pupils are able to enjoy a
more diverse programme throughout the week. There is still plenty of time for
sport and games, but these co-curricular activities will help them to discover
a whole host of new hobbies and skills.”
