The first Sixth Form Society event of this academic year saw two
familiar faces return to the College and share some valuable advice on the
transition from school to adult life. James Wilkinson and Nick Lowry both left
Shiplake College shortly after the turn of millennium and over a decade on now
fully realise the impact that life at school had on their futures.
Over 70 Sixth Formers attended the talk in the new Eve Lecture
Theatre, finding it highly informative. James and Nick focussed mainly on the
choices facing our senior pupils in the next few months and years. Deciding
whether to go to university, and also settling upon a suitable career, can be a
daunting prospect.
With the benefit of hindsight, James and Nick both explained how
they wished they had heeded teachers’ advice and worked harder whilst at
school. Their grades were not as good as they hoped but they still went on to achieve
amazing things and gain memorable experiences. Both men are now enjoying
successful business careers and encouraged the pupils to have a very good
reason to go to university, rather than just due to the nightlife.
Head Chapel Warden Barney Aldridge commented: “The
talk was very good and educational. The guys were down to earth and
student-friendly, meaning we all felt involved in the talk.”
Fellow Sixth Former Toby Brough added: “The speakers had great charisma and
demonstrated the importance of having a good attitude and constantly striving
for success. It was reassuring to hear that it is not the end of the world if
you get something wrong in life. Failure can mean the beginning of another
great success.”
A series of Sixth Form Society events across the year will cover
topical issues including the upcoming general election, as well as exploring
routes into various careers in popular industries.
