Cakes Combat Cancer

The Macmillan Cancer Support Coffee Morning took place at Shiplake College on Friday 30 September. Internationally renowned as the ‘world’s largest coffee morning’, the fundraising initiative sees companies, families and friends across the UK host coffee mornings, selling baked goods and hot drinks to raise money for this worthwhile charity. Shiplake’s own Coffee Morning was a great success; hosted in conjunction with the Parents’ Association, with many parents donating baked goods, time and money to make this the most successful coffee morning fundraiser Shiplake has ever hosted.

Macmillan is the largest registered cancer care and support charity in the UK. The charity works with cancer sufferers and their families, providing support, nurses and specialist health care professionals. Macmillan aims to provide practical, medical and emotional support. Experts estimate that cancer will affect one in three of us; a staggering statistic, and one that makes raising money for this incredible cause ever more worthwhile.

A constant stream of families and staff members headed to the OVR, drawn in by the promise of delicious home-made and shop-bought goods. Some came armed with their own offering, adding to the ever-growing pile of mouth-watering treats. Overwhelmed with donations, the remaining cakes were taken outside for pupils to buy at break. The sales raised over a whopping £420 for Macmillan, which makes it by far the most successful coffee morning the College has ever run. A big thank you to all parents who organised the event, donated cakes and cookies and, perhaps most importantly, helped get through the array of confectionary!
