A Sweet Side of Science

Year 11 scientists have been busy studying the structure of the DNA molecule in Biology lessons. Already a tricky subject to tackle, Mr Grant Lawson made the task more hands-on by setting the pupils the challenge of building their own physical structures, to demonstrate DNA molecules. Below, Mr Lawson explains the challenge:

‘The Year 11 students have been studying the structure of the DNA molecule in Biology. Two sets were set the challenge of building their own 3D model of the double helix for prep. Both sets of students rose to the challenge and came up with a variety of interesting designs utilising all manner of materials. However, I was particularly impressed with the sweet model constructed by Jack Rees; it was colourful, interesting and the right shape, it was by far the best and deservedly won the overall prize!’
