Cadets see the World from Above
CCFTrips & Visits

The CCF is a popular co-curricular activity; as well as teaching important skills such as community, leadership and teamwork, pupils are also able to experience a plethora of unusual activities. For cadets from the RAF section of the Combined Cadet Forces, a recent excursion was a trip to RAF Benson for an Air Experience Flying Day. Many thanks to Mr Tom Bayley for the following report of a successful and eye-opening day:

‘A prompt 11.00am start and 30-minute drive found 11 cadets and two members of staff, Mr Bayley and Mr Peter Hewston at RAF Benson. After watching the required safety video, the boys were all incredibly eager to have their first flight in a ‘tutor’. Three pilots were on hand during the workshop, and the boys were bundled into their flying overalls, helmets and gloves – and then the fun began… Because of the close proximity to Shiplake, some of the students took the opportunity to take a view of the College from the air, and those that live close by even managed to spot their houses! The flights lasted approximately 35 minutes each, at a height of 3,000 feet. The pupils also enjoyed aerobatics, such as barrel rolls, Cuban 8s and stall turns; cadets were even able to take control of the planes to perform the manoeuvres!

The pupils all agreed that it was an excellent day, and one that they won’t forget for quite some time! The group felt highly privileged that they are in a school where opportunities like are encouraged.’
