A Bite out of the Big Apple
Trips & VisitsCo-Curricular

During half term, a group of Sixth Form pupils made the journey across the pond to the Big Apple. For A Level pupils studying Theology and Philosophy, Photography or Psychology, the trip was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to visit sights and monuments in New York, taking in the cultural impact that the American city has. Arguably the art and fashion capital of the world, New York is also home to a range of religions, a variety of businesses and poignant events in history, making it the ideal place for those studying these subjects to learn more outside the classroom. The group were accompanied by Miss Chloe Mordue (Head of Photography), Miss Lizzy Morgan (Head of Religious Studies) and Mr Richard Ebbage (Head of Psychology).

The group of pupils travelled and stayed together, but spent time visiting tourist attractions in their subject groups. Accompanied by their respective heads of department, the trip proved insightful. New York is rich in culture, home to many historical sights and sites which have had international impacts. Visiting in the middle of February, the fever from Donald Trump’s inauguration day was still rife, making it a particularly interesting time to visit America. The groups visited such architectural attractions as the Brooklyn Bridge Walk, the Highline, the Rockefeller Centre and the New York Library. The group was also able to pay a visit to One World Trade Centre, experiencing a talk there, before visiting the 9/11 museum and the United Nations Headquarters.

The group also enjoyed several activities, including an Evangelical Church service, a graffiti workshop in Manhattan, a boat cruise around the Statue of Liberty, and time to go shopping. For a short trip, the group certainly packed in as much as possible! When asked to name a favourite experience, pupils were incredibly hard-pushed. However, all were agreed on one highlight – the food. Bubba Gumps, Chinese food and eating at the Hard Rock Café – and plenty of Starbucks - were all high on the list.
