Having a Crack at Mathematics
AcademicMathematics

The Shiplake College Mathematics Department have been busy creating new and exciting ways to engage pupils in the subject. In-keeping with the season, Mr Chris Lehane-Kendrick created an Easter relay quiz, with maths-themed clues to guide small groups of Year 7 pupils around the College grounds in the quickest time possible.

Mr Lehane-Kendrick comments: ‘students in Year 7 took part in an Easter-themed Mathematics relay during the last week of term. 12 mathematical problems were hidden around the College, each involving solving an Easter-based problem. With the sun out in force, students eagerly ran from question to question, putting all the skills learnt this year so far to the test. For the harder problems, the groups had to show some creativity in working through new methods. Congratulations to Matt Grundy, Luke Byca, Flynn Wilson and Charlie Moss, who won with an ‘eggsellent’ 10 out of 12 correct!

And other year groups have been taking an interest in Mathematics outside the classroom too. Earlier in the term, a group of pupils participated in the UK Intermediate Maths Challenge, which sees over 250,000 students from more than 3,000 schools across the UK take part in the national contest. Students have 60 minutes to answer 25 problems, which test their mathematical reasoning, precision of thought, and fluency in using mathematical techniques to solve interesting problems. The following pupils did incredibly well, achieving a Bronze or Silver award:

Silver

  • Josh O’Hare
  • Joseph Ruffle
  • James Roxburgh-Smith

Bronze

  • Joseph Kerrison
  • Charlie Dodd
  • James Howard
  • Finn Wallace
  • Zak Tilley
  • Matthew Waller
  • Farhad Huseynli
  • Rhys Ash
  • Jacob Kirby
  • Hugo Rex

Congratulations to all involved!
