Exploring Different Religions
AcademicTheology and Philosophy

Religious Studies is a popular choice at A Level; many pupils choose the subject to research the wealth of information about different religions, and how these relate to cultures and lifestyle. Year 13 pupils are currently conducting research for a synoptic exam paper, which will count as 50% of their A2 grade. The paper will focus on religious beliefs after death and an evaluation of whether or not life after death is necessary for religious belief. A variety of visitors have since been in to discuss different religions with the class. Head of Religious Studies, Miss Lizzy Morgan, provides the following report on some perceptive and insightful discussions:

‘A breadth of ideas is being studied by the Year 13 class for their upcoming examination. Head of College Emily Wilkinson has chosen to focus on Mormonism, whilst Tia Dinescu, who has an accepted offer to study at Cambridge University next year, has chosen to research Tibetan Buddhism – the variety is staggering and makes for highly engaging conversations in the classroom. I have recently organised for members of the local community and lecturers in the field of Religious Studies to attend classes to share their wealth of knowledge and experience, opening up discussions and enhancing the pupils’ understanding. Our pupils loved asking questions at the end of each talk, which all had a ‘university seminar’ feel to them. Era and Gurpal Singh, from the Siri Guru Singh Sabha Gurdwara in Reading attending, as well as Dr David Webster from Gloucestershire University, Main Cain from Oxford Brookes University, Sandra and Lisa from the Nicherin Buddhist Community in Taplow. Shiplake’s very own Reverend Stephen Cousins also came to speak in a lesson, discussing Anglican beliefs, and Dr Ashok Khare spoke on Hinduism. Thank you all for the time and detailed information!'
