Girls Celebrate Sporting Successes
SportGirls

On Thursday 4 May, the Year 12 and 13 girls enjoyed a black tie event in the Great Hall, to celebrate the sporting season so far. As part of the Awards Evening, a sumptuous three course dinner was served, before the heads of each different sport, and the captains of the 1st teams, went up onstage to give a recap of the season, and present their own awards to different players.

The evening, which was organised by Head of Girls’ Games Mr Tom Walter, and joint Captains of Girls’ Sport Mimi Brough and Sophia Gibbs, was a resounding success. The girls have participated in a record-breaking year this year, as more girls than ever have taken part in sport. In a first for Shiplake College, a girls’ hockey team have been fielded a full team. Netball has seen increasing popularity, with three teams taking part in fixtures. Captain of Netball Lauren Way gave a humorous and touching account of the successful season; Captain of Girls’ Rowing Claudia Adams reflected on the trials and victories for the girls’ crew; Captain of Hockey Issy Webster reminisced on her team’s wins against Magdalen College School and Lord Wandsworth College. Although the tennis and rounders season has just begun, Mr Walter also commented on the hard work and enthusiasm that the girls have shown, making his job as Head of Girls’ Games so enjoyable.

The girls have all worked incredibly hard throughout the academic year, at the variety of sports on offer. Awards were handed out to reflect their passion and commitment, presented by each Head of Sport. They are as follows:

The athletes must also show outstanding achievement, contribution and attitude throughout the season. Lauren was the proud recipient of the only Colours Blazer awarded to the girls, as she has shown fantastic leadership throughout her time as Captain of Netball, with her unfaltering enthusiasm and infectious eagerness on the pitch.
