Sport Switches to Solar
Whole SchoolDevelopment

Over the summer holidays, the Sports Hall roof was given a make-over! The original roof, from when the Sports Hall opened in 1980, had come to the end of its life and so a new one was scheduled as part of the College's ongoing programme to not only maintain the standards expected but protect the long term future of our buildings. Whilst the new roof was being put in place and the scaffolding was up, this was the perfect opportunity to also install a Solar Photovoltaic (PV) System.

The final phase of the project, therefore, was to install 160 solar photovoltaic modules onto the south-west and north-east aspects of the Sports Hall. These 260-watt modules now provide the College with a 41.6kW capacity PV system to convert sunlight into electricity. What the system generates will be used to power the Sports Hall itself, which will greatly reduce our outlay. Not only is the College improving its carbon footprint by switching to this eco-friendly system, it is anticipated the College will save about £7,000 a year.

The new roof itself has had a positive impact within the Sports Hall as the new skylights provide far better ambient lighting, in turn improving the aesthetics of the hall overall.

The video below, produced by pupil Haydon Stride in Year 11, also shows off the new Sports Hall roof!
