Pupils Complete Cross Country Challenge
SportHouses

Thursday 26 February brought wind, rain, and the annual House Cross Country event. Pupils from each year group and house were required to take part in the event, showcasing sporting prowess and gaining glory for their Houses. Students and staff from the College donned their gym kit to brave the local course, which took the runners through the grounds of the College and around Shiplake village.

Due to particularly unfavourable weather conditions, the intended route had to be amended. This reduced the run from 5K to 4K, which proved to be a popular decision! Ready and raring to go, the Lower School started proceedings at the sound of Mr Tom Crisford’s whistle. Starting on the Front Field, runners passed through New Field and out into the village of Shiplake. Following close on their footsteps, the remainder of the pupils set off on the course.

The runners passed through the village of Shiplake, past the station, and up a very steep hill, finishing the race through the College Rugby Fields and across the finishing line. The participants were not without encouragement; residents of Shiplake village were out in force to cheer them on, braving the wind to show support of the runners.

Mud-splattered and breathless, Ollie Riley from Orchard-Lapping House crossed the finish line first, to the support of the watching members of staff. With an impressive time of just 16 minutes 51 seconds, Ollie maintained his winning title from the previous year’s event. He was followed across the finish line just seconds later by Matthew Aldridge, from Skipwith-Eggar House, with a time of 16 minutes and 55 seconds. Matthew Goodwin, of Burr, gained third place with his time of 17 minutes and 48 seconds.

Leading the Lower School was Cameron Jones (Olympians) with a time of 20 minutes and 6 seconds. Gaining second place by a fraction was Rory Diez-Harrison (Titans) with a time of 20 minutes and 51 seconds, and in third place for the Lower School was Jack Underwood, achieving a time of 20 minutes and 52 seconds.

The girls were lead by Hannah Cartwright, of Skipwith-Eggar House, achieving a time of 24 minutes and 1 second. She was closely followed through the finishing post by Daisy Gill or Burr House, with a time of 24 minutes and 26 seconds, with Everett’s Emma Haynes finishing third in 24 minutes and 39 seconds.
