This week’s fixtures were played in the beautiful sun, and the teams made the most of the summer sports.

Shiplake U15A XI vs Abingdon U15 XI

‘The game was played under the 20/20 format and, having lost the toss, Shiplake were first to field. The Abingdon openers proved to be very capable batsmen punishing any misjudgement in length from Bowcock and Bishop. However, once again Westbrook Burr and Simpson came to the rescue, both bowling tightly whilst also taking wickets. Simpson bowled his four overs for 21 runs, taking two wickets in the process, whilst Ben bowled his quota for 33 runs taking one wicket in the process- he deserved more! After 17 overs, some good death bowling from Tom Ibbitson restricted Abingdon to an imposing but gettable 157. Our reply did not start well, with both Bowcock and Brown being dismissed for ducks.

At 6-2 we were in trouble; this was when Darius Braun stepped up to the plate, playing patiently and sensibly for a very impressive 38. His running, energy and decision-making should act as a lesson to all of our team. At times he was ably supported but too many batsmen came and went, not showing enough respect for their wickets in the process. Ibbitson batted bravely at the end, but by the end of the innings Shiplake found themselves at 113-9, losing by 44 runs. This Saturday’s match against local rivals Pangbourne will need more git and determination from almost all of the batsmen. I have no doubt that this will be evident.’
