It's All Talk for A Level Historians
HistoryTrips & Visits

On a wet November morning, pupils studying A Level History ventured cross country to Cambridge, accompanied by Head of History Mrs Catherine Munro. The group were headed to listen to a series of lectures about twentieth century Russia; a topic that both year groups study as part of the A Level specification. The lectures took place in the hallowed halls of the Cambridge University debating chamber, where many high profile debates have taken place throughout the twentieth century, with speakers such as Churchill, Nehru and Fry taking the floor.

The group listened intently to practical talks from chief examiners and textbook writers, which proved helpful for providing exam techniques and tips. British historian, academic, and author Professor Robert Service gave a phenomenal lecture on the seven causes of the Russian Revolution. Specialising in the history of the Soviet Union, Professor Service has written extensively on the subject, and his wealth of knowledge was abundantly apparent in the engaging talk he gave the Sixth Form pupils.

The final talk of the day was given by Sir Richard Dearlove, the ex-head of MI6 – arguably the highlight of the day! Sir Richard talked to the pupils about Soviet espionage during the Cold War, telling tales of intrigue, identity and ‘illegals’ in great depth. He certainly proved inspirational!

Mrs Catherine Munro said of the day that she was ‘particularly impressed with pupil Ollie Riley, who had an excellent discussion with historian Nick Shepley. The lecture series was both fascinating and informative, and it was really useful for the Sixth Formers to get a feel of university-style teaching in a historic setting.’
