A 45 acre site on the banks of the River Thames makes Shiplake College an ideal location for pupils who love sport. Rowers train on an idyllic stretch of the Thames and can also travel two and a half miles upstream to make use of the beautiful Henley Royal Regatta course, whilst Rugby players and Cricketers compete on our award winning grounds.
The College has a large Sports Hall, Fitness Room, Sports Studio and two Squash Courts. The Astroturf provides hockey training facilities and matches are played on Astroturf at Reading HC, Henley and Sonning-on-Thames. In the summer the Astroturf is used for tennis alongside the College's two grass courts. Cricket, Rugby, Rowing, Hockey, Tennis and Football (Lower School only) are the College's main sports for the boys, as well as Netball, Hockey & Rounders for the Senior girls. Fixtures are regularly played on Wednesday and Saturday afternoons. There are also many highly competitive House competitions. Athletics, Tug of War, Cross Country, Swimming, Football and Rugby are all fiercely contested. The Major sports programme is complemented by a range of activities from which pupils can choose throughout the year. Our ‘Minor sports’ options include activities such as Karate, Polo, Rifle Shooting, Trampolining, Badminton, Kayaking and Squash.
Overseas tours are seen as a major part of the sporting calendar with recent trips going to St Lucia (Cricket, Tennis & Netball), South Africa (Rugby), USA (Rowing) and Spain (Hockey).
