Burr House accommodates approximately 50 pupils between Year 7 and 12. It welcomes a combination of full and weekly boarders, as well as a small number of day pupils in the upper years. Burr is centrally located on the College campus, adjacent to the main drive of the College opposite the brand new John Turner Building.
The Housemaster, Mr Adam Mallins, joined Burr House in September 2017. His specialist subject is Geography, and he also teaches Travel and Tourism. Adam especially loves the outdoors, coaching sport in particular. He is also a keen tennis player, and currently serves as Master in Charge of Tennis.
Mr Mallins is supported by Assistant Housemaster Mr George Miller, matron Mrs Jennie Miles-Thomas, and an enthusiastic team of visiting tutors.
Burr is predominantly a boarding house. In lower year groups, boys live in shared dormitories, with supervised prep taking place in an attached classroom. As boys progress into senior years, they are allocated their own bedroom which provides a private, quiet area in which to work or take a break from the hustle and bustle of Shiplake life.
Burr House is fortunate to have a number of communal areas including an amphitheatre style TV room where Sky Sports 1 is often the channel of choice, especially on weekends where boys tune in to catch the latest sporting events. There is also a pool table room, a gaming room and the newly installed 'table tennis arena'. The school's ongoing refurbishment programme is also serving to upgrade a number of rooms and dormitories and a large state of the art shower room has just been installed. The House is wireless networked throughout, although the use of the internet is tightly restricted come bedtime. A number of events are put on in the evening including Manhunt, football tournaments, comedian visits, bubble football, film nights, BBQs, card games, while at weekends boarders enjoy a range of activities including ice-skating, go-karting, wake-boarding and day trips.
