Making Tracks at Thruxton
Boarders' ProgrammeTrips & Visits

Boarders at Shiplake have an extensive choice of activities as part of the Boarding Activities Programme; each weekend, pupils are given the option of taking part in an exciting challenge. All pupils are welcomed along too, ensuring that a big group of pupils participates in the activities. On Sunday 18 September, the activity was go-karting. 24 pupils, accompanied by Mr Tiki Ebun-Cole, Mr Alex Hunt and Mr George Miller headed to the go-karting tracks at the famous race course Thruxton.

Despite the long drive, the journey was worth it; as the packed minibuses drove further from Shiplake the clouds cleared and the sun came out, and by the time the group had arrived at the race course the day was beautifully sunny and clear – ideal driving conditions! Kitted up in overalls, helmets and gloves, the pupils were raring to go. As the activity was so popular, the group was split into three groups of eight. Each group then had turns on the track, getting used to the characteristics of the course and the ability of the karts, before revving up the speed and getting some fantastic times. The rest of the group got to spectate, watching some fierce racing and spectacular overtakes!

Each group were put through their paces with heats and then placed accordingly in the starting grid, before commencing the final few laps. With only a couple of crashes into the tyre barrier, the Shiplake pupils were absolutely flying. They certainly put the staff to shame, who got to try out the go-karting during a break – Mr Hunt was by far the quickest, who was clearly an experienced go-karter. Mr Miller was a close second. The pupils thoroughly enjoyed the experience, and look forward to the next activity – paintballing!
