Creative Week at DT Camp
Design & Technology

Both current and perspective students have been attending the DT camp at the College this week. The camp started on Monday and will run through to Friday, the aim of the camp being to combine the pupil’s passion for design and technology with the opportunity to design and create. The pupils are completing a number of small projects which have been produced to either introduce new skills or develop existing ones.

On Monday the boys were pewter casting, using Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Computer Aided Manufacture (CAM). They investigated a design and produced it on the computers, then manufactured a cast on the laser cutter.

Tuesday they were making gift boxes. Using more traditional skills and working in wood, the boys marked out and cut the boxes by hand, they then designed and decorated a lid.

It was then water rocket Wednesday. Investigating through trial and error the pupils made individual rockets and competed in a competition to launch the most accurate and furthest rocket.

Today the boys are producing music makers, using transistors, capacitors and resistors the boys will make an 8 note keyboard. The aim is to learn a song and play it at the end. During the day, they will also learn about various electronic components and principles.

Tomorrow it will be ‘Marble Madness’. The boys will take part in a small team challenge to see who can make a marble run that lasts the longest. They will be using the tools in the workshop along with the imagination and enthusiasm they have shown all week.

A massive thank you to Mr Tom Bayley for coordinating the camp, Mr Bayley had these words to say on the week’s events: ‘It has been great to see the pupils grow in confidence throughout the week. They have truly embraced the challenges they’ve been set and have displayed their abilities to work individually and in groups.’
