In a frenzied March, the Business Studies Department managed
to welcome three speakers from very different backgrounds. The guest speakers
were available to give students an insight into the world of business, exploring
the challenges and triumphs of entrepreneurship and the merits of charity work.
On March 5, the entrepreneur and Youth Performance Coach,
James Davey, greatly impressed Shiplake students with his insightful
understanding of how the ‘real world’ of business actually operates. James
started his own company focusing specifically on young people, recognising the
challenges faced in today’s society and how to overcome them. He offered a
wealth of experience, and managed to engage the students on their level. James’
website can be found at www.daveypartnership.com.
From the College itself, the Bursar spoke to students from
Year 12 about the school’s finances. The talk formed an invaluable introduction
to the section of the syllabus that covers financial affairs. The pupils gained
a great deal of practical information and analysis. The example of the College
gave value to the information, bringing to life the theories and examples
studied in class.
Finally, CEO and founder of AMECA, Ruthie Markus, opened up
a world of possibilities in terms of raising money for charities working in
Africa. Ruthie showed a world of potential, galvanising students and expanding
ambitions. As with all the talks, pupils were reminded of the maxim that
business is not just about making money; it is also about leaving your legacy
to the world.
Students gained both the skills and knowledge needed in an
increasingly competitive workspace. The College feels that the experience and
enthusiasm brought to the table is invaluable, helping to meet the mission
statement of ‘preparing the students today for the challenges of tomorrow.’
