2015 marks 50 years from the founding of Welsh House, and on
Saturday 25 April a celebratory dinner was held to mark the momentous occasion.
Staff, parents and Old Vikings gathered together in the
Great Hall to celebrate the founding of a now-iconic Shiplake house. The guest
of honour was Mr David Welsh, the founding Housemaster. He was joined by
long-serving staff member Mr Peter Gould, Mr Alex Hunt, and current Welsh Housemaster Mr Jonnie
Howorth; indeed, four generations of Welsh Housemasters were together under one
roof!
The event was a tumultuous success. An ‘open house’ was held
in Welsh, giving past students and present parents an opportunity to look around
the house. Photos of alumni and current pupils were displayed on the walls,
ensuring that all eras of the school community were well represented.
A drinks reception followed, giving attendees the ideal
chance to socialise and reminisce with one another; the buzz from the event was
contagious and there was a fantastic sense of camaraderie in the room. Once
everyone had taken their seat in the filled Great Hall, the Headmaster Mr Gregg
Davies addressed the crowd. He thanked David Welsh, saying how delighted the Shiplake
cohort were that David could take time to return to the College and celebrate
the occasion. Mr Davies went on to explain how fortunate to have many excellent Welsh Housemasters follow in his footsteps, three of whom joined the dinner.
The Headmaster went on to tell the guests traits of Welsh House boys; the commitment
to sporting achievements was emphasised, along with an impressive dedication to
House competitions. Indeed, the Welsh House boys were often in possession of
the Baldry trophy! The ardour and enthusiasm shown by past students is now
synonymous with Welsh House, and they are a credit to the school.
Grace was lead by Mr Guy Davis, after which a sumptuous
three course dinner was served. There was a superb atmosphere throughout the
evening, with parents, staff and former pupils socialising together to mark the
momentous occasion. See you again in 50 years!
