Taking On Cheltenham Ladies College
Debating

On Tuesday 23 November, we were delighted to welcome Cheltenham Ladies College for a debate fixture. Cheltenham brought across two middle-school teams and two senior teams for the match. It was a wonderful event where the quality of discussion and debate was incredibly high.

Mr Joe Player, who organised the event, said the following:

‘Our Junior A team was captained by the determined Benjamin Hubbard and included Kit Marsh, J Hyde and Luke Leamon who as the youngest member of the team, did an awesome job of holding his own. Our Junior B team was captained by the resolute Louis Kennedy, and included Seb Currie, T Cockings, and James Middlehurst, with James in particular impressing with his calm, clear delivery. The debates were on the threat of future technology and how much school prepares students for real life. Both sides did a fantastic job of representing the College.

Our Senior A team was captained by the always eloquent Izzy Young, and included Emily Banks, R Goggins and Jake Rodgers. Our Senior B team was captained by the knowledgeable Olivier Wrobel and consisted of Will Bethell and James Man, who deservers extra credit for making the jump from junior team to senior on the day. The motions in these debates were about the government's response to Covid-19 and about traditional masculinity.

Against stiff opposition, our teams put in an excellent performance. Standing up and speaking in public is really difficult and a crucial skill to have. It was outstanding to hear young people talking so knowledgeably and passionately about such important issues. We are really proud of all those who participated - and also really grateful to Kits Tanner, Hugo Palmer-Garrett and Lucy Price, who gave up their time to judge and oversee some of the fixtures.'
