RSE and PSHEE

Relationship & Sex Education (RSE), including Personal, Social, Health & Economic Education (PSHEE) acknowledges and addresses, the changes and challenges young people experience in society today and equips them with the knowledge, understanding, and skills that enable them to live physically and mentally healthy lives.

At Shiplake, we promote the personal development of our students, highlighting key features of life in modern Britain and the challenges that young people face. We celebrate what we have in common and understand and seek to gain a better awareness of the various characteristics we all have and what keeps us safe within the law.

The aim of PSHEE and RSE is to promote healthy relationships, encourage pupils to manage risks, appreciate that actions have consequences, develop financial literacy, and become aware of the increasing influence of peers and the media. It nurtures pupils into becoming responsible and respectful active citizens who contribute positively to society.

PSHEE and RSE is an extremely important topic in which pupils will reflect on some of the most important aspects of being human, living in society, and importantly, learning how to thrive and be successful in the world. Discussion is always central to this lesson and will form the majority part of each lesson.

Resources

The College uses the Wellio platform to deliver the lessons for RSE and PSHEE in Key Stage 3 and 4. The platform enables pupils to discuss various topics, watch clips which are pertinent to their age group and on trend, and also carry out quizzes to demonstrate a level of understanding on the topics. The platform enables a teacher to look at data to recognise which topics students have fully understood and where there is more education to be carried out either in the lesson, in other subject areas or in tutor time.

Additional Opportunities

Students have the opportunity to discuss various topics taught within other subject areas to gain a deeper understanding of a topic. Tutors can also play a big part in further developing topics in tutor time and in 1:1 meetings with their tutees.

Students also benefit from external speakers visiting the college to deliver a range of important topics which enable further development and understanding of a topic from within the lesson. Our ranges of external speakers and visitors include:

  • Oddballs: raising awareness of testicular cancer
  • Breast check and general wellbeing for our female pupils
  • Consent: delivering the consent message
  • GoDrive: promoting safe driving for our Year 12 and Year 13 pupils
  • Simon Leigh: drugs, pitfalls, and ways to avoid drug use
  • Thomas Franks Sports Nutritionist: healthy eating and eating well when exercising

Curriculum

The core RSE and PSHEE curriculum is focused upon the development of the three key strands of the RSE and PSHEE Statutory Guidelines:

  • Relationships & Sex Education
  • Living in the Wider World
  • Health and Wellbeing

RSE & PSHEE is taught by highly experienced staff who have a passion and understanding for all the challenges that face young people in today’s society. The majority of the lessons are led by members of the SLT.
