Sports Report

In today's final Sports Report of the Spring Term, we catch up on all that is sport from the previous week. Reports on Rosslyn Park 7s and Schools' Head of The River will be featured in separate articles and so, in this report, learn more about the Staff vs Pupil fixtures and House competitions that have taken place. We also catch up on the U12 girls' netball team's final match, as well as a boys' U13 basketball fixture.

Basketball

Boys’ U13 vs Reading Boys School

The U13 basketball team played their 2nd ever match for Shiplake College in a fierce, action-packed match against Reading Boys School. Reading Boys started the better side with some clinical shooting and took a lead going into the first break of 6-9. Shiplake rallied together and came flying out in the second quarter with bucket after bucket and went into half time 17-11 up – a really dominant display!

This second quarter would prove to be crucial as the game seemed to level out with both teams creating lots of chances in Q3. Reading Boys really gave a huge push in the final quarter to get back into the game and managed to get the score back to 26-25 with two minutes to play. However, play of the game came right in the dying moments from A Palmer when a player from Reading Boys broke through our defence and attempted a lay-up which was emphatically blocked by A Palmer before he retrieved the rebound, dribbled past three opposing defenders, and scored down the other end to secure the 28-25 victory.

A fantastic spectacle and a great advert for basketball at Shiplake from these young players. Players of the Match went to A Palmer and O Thorpe and a special mention to O Owens who made his debut.

Staff vs College

The Staff vs College game is a rememberable occasion for the Spring Term where our Year 13s put on the Shiplake football shirt for one last time. A huge shoutout goes to the members of staff participating in the event, some of whom had never played before, and also to the Year 13 pupils that conducted themselves so admirably.

A hard-fought game overall that also saw Mr Miller get on the scoresheet for the final time. An outstanding season has now come to an end, and all the Year 13s can leave knowing the impact they have had on the sport at Shiplake and knowing that they left everything they had on the sports pitches of Shiplake.

Report: Mr Claridge, Head of Football

House Football

House football took place on Monday 25 March across the College with the junior competition taking place in the morning and the senior in the afternoon. Matches were 8-minutes in length, and it was wonderful to have such a high turnout throughout.

In the junior event, congratulations to Everett House for taking the win and, in the senior event, well done to Welsh House for doing the same. Welsh House would go on to win House Football overall having edged Skipwith House in points overall.

Netball

Girls’ U12 vs Reddam House

The U12 girls had their final matches of the netball season on Wednesday 20 March with three teams taking on Reddam House. The A team won 10-6 with Player of the Match going to L Hourd, while the Bs went down 4-6 with A May receiving Player of the Match. The C team, however, got their first win with a 7-5 victory! M Madden and A De Felice both received Players of the Match.

Coaches: Mrs Neill and Mrs Dunn

Staff vs Gilson

On Tuesday 19 March, a group of Year 13 netballers played the female staff at Shiplake College in the much-anticipated Staff v Pupil Netball Match. The match started off intensely, with Gilson taking over the first quarter of the game which was then quickly evened up by the staff as the match went on. By half-time, the score was equal, which showed how close the match was. This put a lot of pressure on everyone, and it was great to see lots of students and staff watching and supporting the match too!

In the last few minutes of the match, the staff managed to score two more goals to win 24-22 against the girls. It was a very good and close game to watch, and everyone enjoyed the match. The watching Year 12s are ready for their chance to play against the staff next year to bring back home the trophy!

Report: G Weedon, Girls’ Sport Captain

Gilson vs Old Vikings

On Friday 22 March, the Year 13 netballers played against a group of Old Vikings in our annual OV vs Gilson netball match. It was lovely to welcome back lots of Old Viking Gilson girls back to Shiplake and it was great to see many familiar faces. Energy was high amongst everyone, and Gilson knew it would be a battle and were desperate to impress the older OVs. In the first quarter, Gilson hit the ground running with some fantastic intercepts from G Wyndam-Smith and F Lenthall. The format was six mini 'sixths’ and Gilson managed to maintain the lead in each one. Some different swaps on the squad for Gilson saw L Schoenmaker at centre who was phenomenal and A Botterill in defence. There were dynamic movements in the D from E Flower and G Weedon, which helped up to secure the win of 27-20 to Gilson. It was followed by a lovely BBQ that both the Old Vikings and current Year 13s really enjoyed! Thank you for organising such a fabulous event. Player of the Match for Gilson went to G Wyndham-Smith and E Hodson for the Old Vikings, with G Weedon and T Firth getting Umpires’ Player of the Match.

Report: A Botterill, Girls’ Netball Captain

House Netball

On Monday 25 March, all of Gilson House gathered on the astro for their annual House Netball Competition. It was a wonderful spectacle with all the girls playing extremely well and really impressing the coaches and teachers with their attitude and play. Well done to the House Netball Captains too for leading their teams so well!

Congratulations to Welsh House who, like the footballers, took the win overall! Players of the Competition for each house were C Baxter for Welsh, L Cheek for Skipwith, S Hodges for Everett, E Dickson for Orchard, and I Davenport-Thomas for Burr.
