As part of an ongoing feature, A Conversation With... we caught up with Shiplake's own Hockey legend Lauren McNally. Lauren joined Shiplake in September 2016 and has since been appointed the role of Captain of Girls' Hockey. She is also the only female player on the School's 1st XI Hockey Team and talented horse-rider.
What were your first impressions of Shiplake College?
My first impression of the College was that it was an extremely friendly and welcoming environment. I was taken aback with how friendly and helpful the teachers are. I also thought the School had really good facilities and pupils get the support that they need.
What annoys you more than anything else does?
I think a biased coach and referee annoy me the most. It means that a really good match becomes boring and leaves people not wanting to play. I’ve seen it before and it means that the team who isn’t being favoured only put half as much effort into the game. I think this ruins the sport and leads people to not want to play it.
What is your favourite film, and why?
I don't particularly have a favourite film but I love the Marvel films. If I had to pick one of the best Marvel films it would have to be Thor Ragnarok.
Who is your hero, and why?
My hero would have to be my granny. This is because I have grown up with her and she is so good at solving any problem and being able to answer any question she is asked. She has achieved so much in her lifetime but is still incredibly active and caring. Furthermore, she has done so much for my family and me; I do not think I could ever thank her enough for it.
What is your favourite thing about life at Shiplake?
My favourite thing about life at Shiplake is the community and the friends you make. Within the community, there is a family that looks out for you and has your best interests at heart.
You are the only girl on the 1st XI Hockey team. Why do you think this is, and how does it make you feel?
I think I am the only girl on the 1st XI Hockey team because I am a hockey scholar. It is a good feeling to have because it means that the effort I have put into hockey and sport has been recognised.
What does the future hold for Lauren McNally?
I am unsure of what the future holds for myself, as I am unsure of what next week holds! I hope that I will be doing something I am passionate about and that I am not sat behind a desk all day.
