Shiplake College is delighted to celebrate the successful launch of a brand‑new Lower School Chess Club, an initiative driven entirely by the enthusiasm and leadership of Year 7 pupil M Hall.
The idea began when Murray approached Mr Crisford with the aspiration to create a club for younger students to learn and enjoy chess during lunchtime. From that moment, Murray took full ownership of the project, demonstrating impressive organisational skills and initiative.
In preparation for the launch session, Hall designed and distributed eye‑catching promotional posters, helping generate excitement across the Lower School. He also conducted a full equipment check, identifying what additional resources were needed and ensuring the club was fully stocked for its first meeting.
When the club opened its doors, Hall continued to lead from the front. Throughout the lively and well‑attended session, he moved around the tables offering support, encouragement and guidance wherever needed. Notably, he even taught one of the boys how to play chess from scratch—an achievement that left both students feeling proud and inspired.
The atmosphere in the room was described as “buzzing,” with students deeply engaged and eager to take part. Feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with many pupils saying they “really enjoyed it” and are already looking forward to returning next week.
Hall’s initiative is a shining example of student leadership in action. His commitment, creativity and drive have helped create a new opportunity for Lower School pupils to challenge themselves, develop strategic thinking, and enjoy time together in a supportive environment.
We look forward to seeing the Chess Club continue to grow under Hall's guidance.
