From 12 to 16 March, six Shiplake pupils from Years 7-9 took part in the TCS Oxford Computing Challenge, three of whom scored above the national average.

Two weeks ago, Tejpal Grewal of Year 7; Charlie Moss, Flynn Wilson, Finlay Woods and James Perry of Year 8 and Sam Waller of Year 9 all competed in the Computing Challenge after receiving invitations based on their results at the Bebras Computational Challenge in November.

Sam Waller, Flynn Wilson and Tejpal Grewal, who appeared in yesterday’s news story after partaking in the Shiplake Maths Challenge, all scored above the national average, and Charlie Moss took on a challenge intended for pupils in the academic year above him.

The challenge involved tasks that tested pupils’ use of logic and computer science. One involved writing a program that a robot should follow to reach its destination. (Message from writer: I spent 15 minutes trying this out, and failed every time – testament to the boys’ patience more than anything…). Not only are the boys being tested on logic and strategy, but on their use of decision-making and trial-and-error.

Head of ICT and Computing Louise Adamson said: ‘This was a very difficult test and three of the students scored above average nationally on the test. Congratulations to them all for their willingness to challenge themselves and for the time spent preparing and entering the competition.
