As of this morning, pupils at Shiplake College will be able to take in the day’s news over breakfast.
Inspired by local prep school Horris Hill, double-sided A5 news pages will now be available on the dining tables during breakfast and lunch times. The mini-publications are delivered daily,
Reading the news daily benefits young people by empowering them to engage with what is happening and being discussed around them, it will enable both pupils and staff to form informed opinions on current affairs which will affect them, and will allow us all to think and argue more critically.
Headmaster Gregg Davies took the inspiration when he was inspecting at Horris Hill School. ‘I saw that it would be a good idea for our boarders who, at breakfast time, are often not ready to engage in conversation. This means that they are available to read the news that is put in front of them, so that by the time the day pupils arrive, and lunchtime shortly after, our boarders will be able to spark up relevant, topical and interesting conversation about the world around us.’
The decision came after a group of Sixth Form pupils were asked for their opinion on whether or not they would be well-received. The overwhelming consensus was that, for exactly the reasons above, these daily news blasts would indeed be an interesting and beneficial idea for the School.
Today’s news included headlines such as ‘May warns of ‘uncharted territory’’, ‘Wayne Rooney Arrested’ and ‘Nishikori triumphs in Brisbane’. The publication, provided by KVH Media Group, covers topics such as politics, international news, wildlife, business, celebrities and sport.
Many thanks to Horris Hill for the inspiration and to Deputy Head of Catering and Events, Ross Denslow, who will change the news daily.
