Our Year 12 photography students were treated to a special lesson in film photography last Friday by Year 13 Photography Ambassador and 35mm film enthusiast, Robert Humphris.
Robert was really kind to bring in all his film equipment to do a demo to both the Year 12 classes. He gave the students his 35mm film cameras for them to take images on during the week and then he demonstrated how to process and develop the 35mm film roll. Robert showed this using a darkroom film changing bag, developer and fixer chemicals and a negative film scanner to see the end results.
Year 12 Photographer, Merry Oakes, tells us more:
On Friday, Robert came into our Year 12 Photography class to give us a demonstration on 35mm film photography and how to use it. For many of us, starting photography for the first time this year, we had little or no experience with using film. Robert's demonstration explained to us the processes behind creating film shots. He showed us a detailed step by step demonstration, by firstly exposing an exemplar film to light to use as a demo, and went through how to manually put the 35mm film onto a reel and into a light-tight film tank. Robert then did this inside a light-tight film changing bag with the 35mm film that we had taken during the week on a film camera in our lessons. This was followed by Robert carefully using different chemicals, specific timings and temperatures to develop the images inside the film tank and allowing them to dry once they were developed. We were able to see the results from the film images taken and this demonstration has given us more insight into film photography, encouraging us to interpret it into our work for our next project. We were really thankful to Robert for bringing in his equipment from home to show us this demonstration and for inspiring us with his enthusiasm for film photography.
Miss Chloe Mordue, Head of Photography said: “The Year 12 Photographers really enjoyed it and it was great to show them something new and exciting about Photography.”
