Business Studies

This term saw the exciting return of the Headmaster’s Business Award, with pupils from Years 10 and 12 showcasing their entrepreneurial flair in a competition that challenged them to develop a new, marketable product or service. This year’s theme centred on sports and leisure with a focus on sustainability, encouraging students to think creatively about how business can contribute to a greener future.

Founded by the Business Studies Department in 2015, the competition originally featured Year 12 pupils only, forming a key part of their marketing curriculum. More recently, Year 10 students—who previously entered a separate 'Dragons’ Den'-style event—have joined the main competition, creating an exciting cross-year challenge.

The first round took place on Wednesday 11 June, where pupils presented their ideas to staff and fellow students during breaktime. Armed with posters, prototypes, and plenty of passion, competitors pitched their innovations to the school community, who were then invited to vote for the ideas they felt showed the greatest potential.

After much deliberation and enthusiastic discussion, three teams were selected to advance to the grand final, held on Friday 20 June:

  • Health Hierarchy – Freddie McCalley, Sam Gallagher, and Charlie Rees - A motivational fitness app that rewards users for strength, self-discipline, and eco-conscious habits, promoting personal well-being and sustainability.
  • BioBall – William Fisher and Rory Elms - A biodegradable golf ball designed to dissolve in water after six months, releasing fish food as it degrades to support aquatic life near golf courses.
  • Shower Time – Barney Maskell and Jacob Andrews - A smart, eco-friendly shower timer made entirely from recycled materials. It automatically shuts off water after four minutes, helping users save water, energy, and money.

In the grand finale, the finalists faced a panel of expert 'Dragons': Mr Howe (Headmaster), Mrs Hill (Head of Business), and Old Viking Anna Davies (16S). Each group delivered a polished pitch, followed by a tough Q&A session where the judges probed into the product's viability, looking closely at pricing, promotion, scalability, and sustainability.

The students had to demonstrate a clear understanding of the 4Ps of marketing—product, price, place, and promotion—as well as consider production costs, potential revenue, and long-term impact. It was a high-pressure environment, but each team rose to the challenge with confidence and creativity.

After a spirited final, BioBall was named the winner of the Headmaster’s Business Award 2025. Their innovative and environmentally conscious product stood out for its originality, clear business plan, and real-world applicability.

Speaking after the event, Mrs Hill praised all the participants:

'As Head of Department, I am thrilled to extend my heartfelt congratulations to BioBall for their outstanding achievement in winning the Headmaster’s Business Award 2025. Their innovation, dedication, and entrepreneurial spirit are truly commendable. The standard of ideas presented this year was exceptional, and the creativity on display sets the bar high for future competitions.'

A special commendation also goes to our Year 10 pupils, who competed alongside the Year 12s and demonstrated exceptional maturity and business insight.

The Headmaster’s Business Award continues to provide a fantastic opportunity for Shiplake pupils to explore the world of business, develop their presentation skills, and think critically about the role of sustainability in modern enterprise. Congratulations to all the pupils who took part - you are the future of innovation!
