We were thrilled to launch the National Theatre’s New Views programme with a talented group of nine pupils last week. This inspiring initiative gives young people the opportunity to explore the art of playwriting, guided by professional mentors and industry insight.
This programme is a yearlong programme which aims to empower pupils to tell stories that matter to them through a series of writing workshops with professional Playwrights and attending theatrical performances.
To kick off the programme, we were delighted to welcome Paula B Stanic, our dedicated playwriting mentor. Paula led an engaging workshop where students were introduced to a range of playwriting techniques and encouraged to begin writing about topics that matter to them personally, from social issues to personal experiences and things they are passionate about.
As the programme progresses, each student will develop their own original script. The most successful pieces will be selected to be performed by professional actors at the New Views Festival at the National Theatre in June 2026 - a truly exciting opportunity to see their work brought to life on stage.
Head of Drama, Mrs Farrell, says:
'This is an amazing opportunity and one that I know our pupils will embrace, recognising how it will develop their playwriting techniques, research, communication and creative skills. It will also further deepen our pupils’ understanding of how powerful theatre can be in creating a shared experience of storytelling.
I’m incredibly proud of our pupils and we can’t wait to see how their ideas evolve over the coming months. Stay tuned for more updates as the programme unfolds!’
