On Sunday 7 June, Shiplake College once again waved its wand and transformed into a magical haven for witches, wizards, and even the occasional curious muggle, as Magic at Shiplake returned for its much-anticipated biannual celebration. Running from 11.00am to 3.00pm, the event offered an enchanting afternoon packed with activities, laughter, and a touch of Hogwarts-inspired mischief.

From the moment guests arrived, there was a distinct sense that Platform 9¾ had been temporarily relocated to the Thames-side campus. Young witches and wizards eagerly set off to explore the day’s magical offerings, which were abundant and varied. Budding potion masters concocted mysterious brews, while artists turned their attention to dragon egg painting - with creations that would not have looked out of place in the care of Hagrid himself.

Aspiring Quidditch stars took to the pitch for expert-led lessons, learning how to handle a broom. Meanwhile, those with a taste for adventure tested their magical prowess in the Philosopher’s Stone Challenge, proving their speed and agility.

A highlight of the day was the Harry Potter-themed LEGO workshop by Master Builders Hub, where creativity and imagination combined to bring scenes from the wizarding world to life. Around the grounds, families followed the magical trail and embarked on a horcrux hunt, tracking down hidden fragments with determination worthy of the Golden Trio themselves. Some proved trickier to find than others - after all, dark magic rarely reveals itself easily!

There were plenty of opportunities to capture the magic, with unforgettable photo moments alongside live owls and the College’s very own invisibility cloak. Much like Harry sneaking through the corridors of Hogwarts, many guests couldn’t resist trying their hand at disappearing - if only for a photograph!

Adding to the spectacle, Berkshire Birds of Prey delivered breath-taking bird handling experiences and flight displays. Their majestic owls and falcons swooping gracefully across the grounds were a fitting reminder that not all post arrives by email - some still prefer the traditional (and far more magical) approach.Even with an unexpected interruption from the resident red kites, the birds held their own - much to the delight of spectators who couldn’t help but liken the spectacle to a run-in with a Hungarian Horntail.

Of course, no visit to the wizarding world would be complete without a stop at Madame Puddifoot’s Café, where guests refuelled with a delightful array of food and drink. The café was bustling throughout the day, offering a perfect place to pause before diving back into the magical action.

Speaking after the event, Alumni and Events Officer, Mrs Spearing, said: ‘It was a magical day, made even more special by the glorious sunshine and the abundance of laughter and smiles. We loved welcoming families to the College and hope that everyone enjoyed the day as much as we did!’

All in all, Magic at Shiplake 2026 proved to be a truly magical occasion. With sunshine overhead and smiles all around, it was a day that captured the imagination and brought a little bit of Hogwarts to life in Oxfordshire. As the final spells were cast and families made their way home, there was little doubt that the magic would linger long after the day had ended - after all, as Dumbledore wisely said, 'Happiness can be found even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light.'
