Trips & Visits

During the half term break, Year 12 students from Art, Photography and Media enjoyed an inspiring trip to St Ives, Cornwall, filled with creative workshops and immersive learning experiences.

Upon arrival, the group made their way to their base at Cohort before heading straight out to explore the bustling streets of St Ives. Students explored the picturesque town and took part in a guided tour of Barbara Hepworth’s sculptures throughout the town, encouraging new ways of interpreting artistic form and meaning.

Media students travelled to an independent cinema in Penzance to watch ‘The Rose of Nevada’, an indie film by UK Director, Mark Jenkin. Shot entirely on film, the screening offered valuable insight into traditional filmmaking techniques and proved both inspiring and humbling for students accustomed to digital media.

Photography students took part in a range of skill-building activities. A highlight of the trip was a sunset photography workshop led by local photographer Chris Webber. Working along the coastline between 8pm and 10pm, capturing the changing light conditions and dramatic landscapes while developing their skills. They also experimented with long-exposure photography, creating striking light trails, and enjoyed an ink printing session, producing their own designs using a traditional press.

Year 12 Art students explored expressive mark-making on the beach using natural materials such as leaves and feathers. They also visited Tate St Ives and the Barbara Hepworth Museum, gaining a deeper understanding of abstract art and artistic processes. Watercolour sessions allowed students to capture the beauty of Porthmeor Beach encouraging creativity and exploration beyond traditional techniques.

The trip concluded with a visit to Falmouth University, where students explored creative courses and future opportunities, gaining valuable insight into potential future pathways in the arts.

Overall, the trip was an enriching experience, providing students with the opportunity to broaden their artistic knowledge, refine their practical skills and draw inspiration from one of the UK’s most celebrated artistic communities.

Please enjoy photos from the trip, including those taken by students and a highlight video created by George Watson.
