During the summer holidays, pupils were invited to take part in a photography competition, held by Digital Librarian Miss Claire Knight. The competition was to get a photograph of themselves taken, reading. The reading material did not have to be a set text; pupils were actively encouraged to read a range of different literature, including fictional books and newspapers. The photograph could have been taken anywhere; perhaps on a sunny beach holiday, halfway up a mountain or just at home in the garden, enjoying the summer sunshine!

The competition was arranged by Miss Knight with the intention of encouraging pupils to continue reading throughout the summer, both set texts and co-curricular books. The competition was open to all year groups and members of staff, and photos could be taken on anything from a camera to a smart phone. With the rising popularity of photo sharing sites, photography is a fast-growing hobby amongst students, and the competition proved very popular.

After a tough deliberation, the winners were chosen. Year 9 pupil Tommy Dudderidge was victorious, winning first place with a very creative photo of him reading a newspaper on the London Underground (shown below). Year 11 pupil Tom Hallam, and Year 8 pupil George Belcher both received a special commendation for the creativity of the photos. Tom’s photo depicted him reading atop a rocky cliff against a stunning blue sky, whilst George’s photo showed him reading against the backdrop of castle ruins. All three boys received a certificate and book vouchers. English teacher Mrs Eleanor Hallam won for the staff category.

The winning photographs will now be made into canvasses to adorn the walls of the Thinking Space.
