In this week's 'A Conversation With...' we talk to Design, Engineering and Technology teacher Mrs Sally Satch, who has been working at Shiplake for more than 20 years! Mrs Satch has always been practically minded and currently is experimenting with resin and stained glass. In her spare time you will find Mrs Satch walking her dog Nesbit, out running or at the seaside with friends.

What is your role(s) and how long have you been at Shiplake College?

I came to Shiplake College in 2001. The Headmaster was Nick Bevan who was a keen rower and he hired me to coach rowing. Later on I taught DET as well, part time to begin with and then full time as I do now.

What is the best thing about working at Shiplake?

There are so many great things about working at Shiplake. Number one has to be the real feeling of family and community. I have made life long friends in my time here which is precious. The environment is stunning. I wonder at it every time I come down the drive or go down to the river. The food is incredible - I'm grateful every day... I hate cooking, and the nature of the job means that no two days are ever the same. Oh, and I'm able to bring Nesbit to work with me. How fabulous is that?

What sparked your passion for DET and what inspired you to become a teacher?

I've always been very practically minded. I loved building things and taking things apart as a kid and it grew from there. I love encouraging youngsters to design and make products that have a practical use as well as an aesthetic one, and watching their confidence grow on the journey as they realise what they can achieve. It's also hugely good fun.

What designer/engineer do you admire the most and why?

There are so many inspirational designers. One of my favourites is Norman Foster, although that is more architectural design. His philosophy involves integration, regeneration, adaptability, flexibility, technology and ecology. His architecture combines these principles.

What materials do you love working with most and why?

I enjoy working with wood/metal and polymers. Recently I have been using resin and stained glass which has been interesting and fun.

Can you tell us a bit about your rowing background and experience?

I was actually a swimmer as a junior. I found rowing later and loved it. A back injury meant I had to stop for some time so I coached instead. I've been able to row vicariously through my children which has been fantastic.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

In my spare time I walk the dog, go for runs, play the piano badly, catch up with friends and have year round picnics at the seaside.

What does the future hold for Mrs Satch?

My life is brilliant and it is my intention to live forever, so continuation of the same will make me most content.
