Tuesday 21 February. Shrove Tuesday. Pancake Day. At 12.50pm, the College’s prefects and chapel wardens assembled on the drive for the highly anticipated annual Shiplake College Pancake Day Race!
The Pancake Race is one of the highlights of the term which pits the prefects and chapel wardens against each other in a relay race up and down the front drive. In previous contests, runners had to flip their pancakes once however this year, they were required to do a double flip before running the length of the course and handing over the pan to the next runner.
With the staff and pupils lined up alongside the course, and Mr Jones providing race commentary and analysis, the atmosphere was building up more and more as we got closer to the start of the race. Once tactics had been honed and refined, and pre-race formalities completed; the teams lined up in their respective positions and awaited the start.
Pancake Races over the years have proven to be thoroughly entertaining and this year proved to be no different. A highly absorbing race where the momentum would change – both teams left everything out on the course (including, occasionally, the pancake itself) and had so much fun.
Everyone gave an excellent account of themselves; however, it was the prefects that once again retained the crown.
