Sports Report

It’s been another busy and exciting week of sport at Shiplake, with strong performances across pitches and courts. Our football teams impressed once again, highlighted by a dominant 1st XI cup win, a late 2nd XI victory, and the 4th XI maintaining their unbeaten run. The girls’ U12A side also produced a fantastic attacking display. Our netball squads were equally active, showing determination and teamwork across a series of challenging midweek fixtures. Here’s your roundup of this week’s Shiplake sport.

FOOTBALL

Girls 1st XI vs The Piggott School

Shiplake came up against a very strong Piggott side who, on this occasion, proved to be the much better team. Despite the challenging conditions and the difficult scoreline, the Shiplake girls showed tremendous determination and resilience, continuing to work hard right until the final whistle. Late in the game, Shiplake created several promising chances and, if not for the Piggott goalkeeper’s excellent form, could well have scored two or three deserved consolation goals. A tough afternoon, but one full of character from the team.

1st XI vs Halliford School (The Society of Heads Football Cup – Round of 16)

Shiplake played well on what was an extremely boggy pitch. They got off to an electric start when some killer through balls enabled Daniel Johnson-Greenwood to score twice in six minutes. There was then a moment to forget for I Morris, who saw the ball roll under his gloves and into the net. The boys recovered well, and through Rory, Charlie and Freddie made it 5–1 at half-time. The second half restarted and saw Alex and Charlie add to the scoreline, making it an emphatic 7–1 win. A special mention to Freddie McCalley and Daniel Johnson-Greenwood, who were exceptional throughout the game.

2nd XI vs Halliford School

The Shiplake 2nd XI came out winners once again in what was another entertaining game of football. Shiplake started well and began to put together some good passages of play, creating strong chances. This led to Shiplake quickly firing into a 2–0 lead, with Carl Seymour able to grab both, the first being a lovely left‑footed strike to get the scoring underway. However, the game was not finished there, and in the space of five minutes Halliford were quickly back on level terms. Despite this quick comeback, Shiplake’s spirit never dropped, and with a few minutes remaining they managed to score a winner with a bullet header from a corner.

4th XI vs Leighton Park School

The fighting 4ths continued their 100% record with a 6–0 win over Leighton Park. Isaac Walmsley scored a brilliant hat-trick and Ethan Chalfont followed with a superb brace. Felix Pilkington added to the tally, scoring from Jake Scothbrooks’ lethal in‑swinging corner. Credit to Sam Baker for another battling performance, and also to last‑minute stand‑in keeper Nicholas McGowan for a series of top saves and a clean sheet.

Girls U12A vs Cranford School

The Shiplake U12 girls football team put on a fabulous team performance to win 6–4 in this competitive game of football. The girls throughout the game showed real desire and grit to pull together as a team and produce a performance filled with hard work and moments of brilliant attacking play. Chloe Conway and Ruby Jones proved resilient in defence and showed tremendous bits of quality when on the ball.

1st XI vs Maiden Erlegh School

Despite the extremely cold and wet conditions, Shiplake managed to continue their winning run. They were off to a lightning start when Rory O'Boyle scored two goals inside the opening 15 minutes. A rebound from a free kick saw Devon Staples extend the lead, making it 3–0 at half-time. The second half saw several rotations, which made the game slightly more disjointed, but Shiplake continued to dominate. Daniel Johnson-Greenwood made it 4–0 with a composed left‑footed strike before Alex Hooker slotted the ball under the keeper to round off the scoring. A successful week for the 1st XI.

2nd XI vs Maiden Erlegh School

Shiplake proved far too strong for a Maiden Erlegh side who were heavily beaten on the day after an excellent all‑round team performance. The boys moved the ball well throughout, with the most pleasing aspect being the defensive discipline and organisation on display. Toby Jmar and Arthur Massie were particularly impressive, contributing superbly both in attack and defence. A strong platform to build on heading into another league fixture on Wednesday.

Girls 1st XI vs Cranford School

Shiplake bounced back well from a heavy defeat to push a strong Cranford side all the way in a narrow loss. Both teams looked to attack from the start, with Cranford taking the lead inside five minutes before Shiplake responded immediately with a well‑struck finish from just inside the box. Cranford then took control and added two more before half‑time, though Shiplake stayed in the contest. A calmly converted penalty by Bethan Thompson reduced the deficit. Cranford extended their advantage again after the break, but Shiplake showed great resilience to score late on and push for an equaliser. A committed team performance with plenty of positives moving forward.

Girls U14A vs Bohunt School Wokingham

The Shiplake U14 girls delivered an excellent performance to earn a 1–1 draw against a very strong Bohunt side. It was an evenly matched contest with both teams creating several chances, only to be denied by excellent defending and some outstanding saves — particularly from Millie Green in the Shiplake goal. Shiplake came close to finding a winner on multiple occasions through Chloe Edwards and Ava English, but despite sustained pressure, the decisive goal wouldn’t come. A hardworking and encouraging display from the squad.

2nd VII vs Reddam House

On Wednesday the Shiplake second team travelled to Reddam House for a netball match. Even though Reddam scored the first goal, spirit was high as capabilities between the two teams were similar, even with Shiplake playing against Reddam’s first team. With Lara Coles scoring the first goal, this led to a positive effect from the team with multiple goals following thanks to Febe Fisher as well. Shiplake went on to win that quarter against Reddam’s first team. After lots of pressure in defence from our Player of the Match Poppy Clarke and Players’ Player Lillia Dix, Reddam started to lose momentum in their game. After a very tired final quarter, Reddam took the win 23–5, but not after a fair fight from Shiplake.

3rd VII vs Leighton Park School

On Wednesday, Shiplake 3rd VII took on Leighton Park in a closely fought and energetic match. Leighton Park came out strong in the first quarter, leading 8–3, but Shiplake responded with determination and great teamwork to close the gap by half-time, trailing just 12–10. The third quarter saw both teams battling hard, with Shiplake showing resilience in defence and sharper movement in attack, although Leighton Park edged ahead 17–13. In the final quarter, Shiplake continued to fight until the very end, showing fantastic commitment and spirit, but Leighton Park maintained their lead to win 21–17. Overall, it was a positive performance full of effort, encouragement, and strong teamwork, with plenty to build on for our next match. Well done everyone!
