Shiplake College is delighted to celebrate the continued success of Year 12 pupil James Middlehurst, who is making an outstanding impact on the international para fencing stage.

Competing at a World Para Fencing satellite tournament in Orange, France on 16–17 May, James delivered an excellent series of performances across all three weapons. In the épée event, he came agonisingly close to securing his first international medal, finishing an impressive 5th out of 17 competitors in a highly competitive field. James went on to compete in both foil and sabre, where he achieved notable success in the poule stages, defeating Paralympic athletes in bouts fought to five touches. These results demonstrate both his skill and composure against some of the world’s most experienced competitors.

James is ranked 8th in the world in U23 épée and holds exceptional U17 rankings, sitting 1st in the world in both épée and sabre, as well as 2nd in foil. In addition, he continues to build strong senior rankings across all three disciplines, underlining both his versatility and consistency.

In recognition of his achievements, James has recently been named British Fencing Young Athlete of the Year (2024–25) at the national BF Community Awards. The awards celebrate the dedication and contribution of individuals across the sport, with winners selected by an independent panel. The panel praised James for reaching “a level of performance which reflects incredible determination and application,” and highlighted that he “embodies what we look for in not just athletes but anyone wishing to fulfil their dreams.” They described him as “a truly impressive young athlete… who has already achieved so much and has so much to look forward to.”

This national recognition is a fitting reflection of James’s hard work, commitment and ambition. Shiplake College looks forward to following his continued progress as he competes at the highest level of the sport. In addition to his sporting success, James will serve as Head of College in the next academic year, highlighting his outstanding contribution to life at Shiplake College both on and off the piste.
