This week brought a fantastic spread of sporting action across the College, with teams stepping up on pitches, courts and rivers alike. Our football sides faced tough but thrilling battles, the netball squads impressed in block fixtures and tournaments, the rowing programme enjoyed a historic weekend at home and abroad, and the rugby teams continued to show real promise. With further success on the rugby field and the much‑anticipated Year 13 girls vs boys match, there’s plenty to celebrate in this edition.
FOOTBALL
U15As vs Winchester College
On Tuesday 10th March 2026, our 15As returned to the winners’ circle following an outstanding performance against a strong, fast and physical Winchester side. We needed a fast start with the ball on the floor — let’s just say we were never going to win the aerial battle! The rock‑solid pair of George Hotston and Ben Keown at the back laid a beautiful platform for some flowing football through the midfield areas. Hadley Sargent and Daniel Mellor absolutely bossed the first 10 minutes, opening up both wingers, with L Waldegrave enjoying the ball at their feet. The opening goal duly came when a cross from Zak Roberts was turned in at the back post by the late‑arriving Waldegrave. The second goal would have had Pep purring! Playing out from the back and through the thirds via Luca Currie, Tom Steward, Daniel Mellor and Joe Filippetto — lots of delicious one‑ and two‑touch football. The ball eventually fell to Sargent, who smashed home from the edge of the box. Quality! We nearly got a third with a smart deflection from the football brain of James Hughes, most unfortunate to see the effort bounce back off the bar and away to safety. In at half‑time 2–0.
The next goal would be hugely significant — and thankfully we got it! An electric start to the second half and again some lovely one‑ and two‑touch football created a crossing opportunity for Steward, which wrong‑footed the defence. Waldegrave smashed home the loose ball from 8 yards out. 3–0 up and going well. Now these lads like to entertain — and duly did by stepping off the gas, giving Winchester more time and space. 3–0 became 3–1 and soon thereafter 3–2! The crowd were being royally entertained! Time for some cool heads and composure. The lads showed their learning and experience in this moment. A worldy save by the Winchester keeper from a Sargent strike kept the score at 3–2. Liam Ellison was unfortunate not to get on the end of a lovely Currie cross with a few minutes to go. We saw the game out on the front foot, with Player of the Match Fillipetto ensuring “thou shall not pass!” Joe was a standout performer from front to back — leading the line with energy whilst also tracking back well in those transition phases. From all the lads, a huge well done and deserved win.
Shiplake College 3 – 2 Winchester College
U15Bs vs Winchester College
Shiplake came off very much second best in this encounter against a very strong and physical Winchester College football side, who took the lead early on in the game. However, the boys never gave up the contest and showed grit and determination throughout that, on another day, could have seen Shiplake score a few themselves.
Shiplake College 0 – 6 Winchester College
U14As vs Winchester College
During one of our most competitive fixtures of the season, the boys performed really well but just couldn't put the ball in the net when it counted. With two well‑matched and evenly balanced teams, this was a very good game of football. At 0–0 at half‑time, Shiplake remained composed in defence without conceding any real chances. Will Hargreaves had a goal disallowed midway through the second half. Despite pushing for a winner, Winchester caught us on the break and fired high into the top corner. Lady luck was not on our side today and sometimes you need it in sport. Very happy with the spirit and fight shown throughout the game — particularly Oli Wray, J Geromoschos and Timmy Jackson, who all stood firm at the back.
Shiplake College 0 – 1 Winchester College
U14Bs vs Winchester College
Shiplake U14Bs carried on their good run of form to beat a good Winchester side 2–1. The game was evenly matched with both sides creating several chances to score, but Shiplake were more clinical on the day, leading them to a 2–1 win.
Shiplake College 2 – 1 Winchester College
U14As Girls vs Holme Grange School
The Shiplake U14s girls put on an excellent team performance to win 6–0. The intensity and enthusiasm were evident from the very start, with Ava English coming close after hitting the inside of the post, before A Ellis-Jones managed to score two in quick succession. The goals did not stop there: a corner from Ava English found its way into the top‑left corner, and two more were added by A Ellis-Jones and Chloe Edwards. A great team performance!
Shiplake College 6 – 0 Holme Grange School
1st XI vs Reddam House School
On Wednesday 11th March, the 1st XI managed to see out the game to make it through to the Super 8 Playoff Final. Shiplake got off to an amazing start, scoring after 13 seconds on the clock. The second soon came through Daniel Johnson-Greenwood, and Shiplake were in firm control. Reddam managed to pull one back before a third was added soon after. The game then dulled a little, but it was Shiplake who created numerous chances to score and managed to see out the game 3–1 winners. Onto the first of two semifinals on Monday for the 1st XI.
Shiplake College 3 – 1 Reddam House School
2nd XI vs Salesian College
Shiplake 2nd XI were on the end of a narrow loss to Salesian College in this very even encounter. Salesian took an early lead, but Shiplake quickly fired back through a long‑range effort. The score remained level until the closing stages, where Salesian managed to head home the winner from a corner. A tough result to take, but a game Shiplake 2nd XI can hopefully learn from.
Shiplake College 1 – 2 Salesian College
3rd XI vs Burnham Grammar School
In a tough game against a strong Burnham side, the 3rds played away on a 3G pitch much bigger than anything they had played on before. They had a good first half and gained a 2–0 lead (one own goal and one added from a low strike by Kit Marsh). However, after injuries hit, Shiplake’s defence became shaky and the Burnham striker was able to score three goals in the second half.
Shiplake College 2 – 3 Burnham Grammar School
4th XI vs LVS Ascot
A fair result was achieved after a tough game in the wind and the mud. The Fighting Fourths battled to the bitter end. Laurie Tate in goal made an outstanding save to keep Shiplake alive in the first half. Felix Pilkington and B Oliver defended fiercely to keep skilful opposition out, with Jake Scothbrook and Sam Baker working tremendously hard in midfield. A good game and a strong point for our heroes (decent refereeing as well).
Shiplake College 0 – 0 LVS Ascot
U15A/Bs vs Aylesbury Grammar School
Another entertaining game and 3–2 scoreline unfolded — but this time a reverse for our A/B mix against a well‑organised Aylesbury side who brought 16 to the party. This counted late on with fresh legs rotating in during the second half. Both sides started well, aiming to get the ball on the deck as the Phillimore wind blew! All went well until a complete air‑kick clearance allowed Aylesbury to waltz in their first goal. Back we came, with captain Liam Ellison and dynamo midfielder Joe Fillipetto leading the response. Aiden Webb enjoyed lots of success on the wing. Chances fell to James Hughes and Zak Roberts in quick succession, drawing fine saves from the goalkeeper. Our equaliser came from a driving run and shot from left‑back Jack Prosser, a thunderous hit from the edge of the box which took a wicked bounce off a divot and into the top corner.
In at half‑time 1–1.
Shiplake started the better in the second half, forcing a series of corners. A smart save at the back post kept out a firm header from Prosser. The Aylesbury keeper was a big point of difference throughout. Will Webb came into the game more on the left‑hand side, and from his driving run and cut‑back, Ellison forced another fine save. Against the run of play, a long clearance downwind was discussed by our centre‑halves — each believing the other should leave it! Aylesbury scored goal number two. As the match opened up, Player of the Match Aiden Webb bossed the right side with quick feet and clever offloads. From another fine move involving Harry Woodward, Tom Steward and Will Webb, the ball eventually fell to Hughes in the box. VAR was not needed as his left ankle was swept away. Penalty. Hughes stepped up and smashed the equaliser into the top corner. 2–2, which probably would have been fair — but another moment of midfield mayhem allowed Aylesbury to score their third with the last kick of the game. A harsh lesson, but a great experience for the boys against a tidy, athletic and organised Aylesbury side.
Shiplake College 2 – 3 Aylesbury Grammar School
1st XI Girls vs St Edward’s School Oxford
On Thursday 12th March 2026, Shiplake Girls 1st XI recorded their biggest win of the season after a brilliant team performance filled with exceptional finishing and a strong and determined defensive display. There were several standout performers, including Saachi Bhambra, Romy Colangelo and A Ellis-Jones. A really positive and enjoyable afternoon of football.
Shiplake College 7 – 1 St Edward’s School Oxford
3rd XI vs St Joseph’s College
A very exciting first half unfolded against St Joseph’s. It finished 4–3, with two goals from winger Will Hunt and a headed goal from Vice‑Captain Barney Maskell. Despite good attacking form, the St Joseph’s striker was quick and accurate, managing to score past Isaac Morris several times. Following this, the 3rd XI defence solidified and dropped its line, having learnt its lesson. No more goals were conceded, but one great finish came from Kit Marsh after being passed the ball from an indirect free‑kick.
Shiplake College 5 – 3 St Joseph’s College
4th XI vs St Joseph’s College
The 4th team brought quite the squad to their last home game of the season in wet and blustery conditions. Shiplake started brightly and took the lead early through Isaac Walmsley, well set up by Ethan Chalfont. Shiplake continued to press and Jake Scotchbrook scored perhaps the goal of the season for the 4ths with a thunderbolt from well outside the box — a fitting way to mark his last home game. Isaac picked up his second soon after, linking well with Felix Pilkington. Just before half‑time, Albie Ball made it 4–0 with an assist from Toby Vivian. After a full change of personnel at the break, Shiplake continued strongly. Archie Parmar came on 10 minutes into the half and scored within 10 seconds, assisted by Charlie Broad. The final goal came from Ryan Bloor, who was in the right place when the St Joseph’s goalkeeper made a wayward clearance which deflected off Ryan into the net. A resounding victory for the 4ths, though much credit goes to St Joseph’s, who worked hard, never let their heads drop, and played in an excellent spirit.
Shiplake College 6 – 0 St Joseph’s College
Girls 1st XI vs St Edward’s School, Oxford
An 8-1 Victory for our 1st XI - great passages of play. A Ellis Jones (Year 9!) played up the pitch, scored a hat trick and was awarded Player of the Match by the opposition as well as Alice Richardson in goal. Other great goals from Febe Fisher, Saachi Bhambra, Chloe Pendlebury and Dessie Bradley.

2nd VII v The Abbey
On Wednesday, Shiplake's seconds made their way to The Abbey. Excitement was high, however nerves crept in during the first quatre. During the first and second quatre they played well but realised they needed to up their game for the next two quatres to reduce the difference in goals. After a strategic switch between positions the seconds got into the flow, scoring and defending well against the opposition. However sadly it wasn't quite enough. With the final score at 11-40 to The Abbey.
Players of the match: Freya Dix and Febe Fisher
Shiplake 11 – 40 The Abbey
3rd & 4th VII - Tournament at LWC
A great day out for both teams, good passages of play and lots to work on. Girls had a great day out thanks to Mrs Dunn and Reverend Medlicott for taking them.
College vs Gilson
Finally, the Year 13 girl’s vs boys match that so many people had been waiting for took place. It was held at lunch, and a big audience turned up to support. It was a really fun match, with lots of the boys learning as they went. A massive well done to the girls, who came away with a 22–8 win, gaining back the shield from last year. Huge well done to Abi O’Shea and Zac Powell for being named Players of the Match! Huge congratulations to everyone, especially the boys who tried their hardest!
Gilson 22 – 8 College
ROWING
Shiplake College Boat Club enjoyed a landmark weekend both on the Hammersmith Tideway and in Amsterdam, delivering a series of exceptional results capped by a historic achievement at the Schools’ Head of the River.
Schools’ Head of the River
For the first time in the event’s history, Shiplake secured an extraordinary double victory, with both the Boys’ 1st VIII and the Girls’ 1st VIII winning their respective Championship events. This remarkable achievement marks a new milestone for the programme and confirms Shiplake’s growing stature among the country’s top rowing schools.
The success did not stop there. The Boys’ 2nd VIII stormed to victory in the School’s 2nd VIIIs category, while the Girls’ 2nd VIII produced an excellent race to finish a strong second in their event. The Boys’ 3rd VIII continued the momentum, taking second in the School’s 3rd VIIIs after a determined row.
Across the younger squads, performances remained impressive. The J16 Championship VIII secured 6th place, showing strong progression as they approach senior competition. The J15 Championship VIII finished 9th, and the J15 2nd VIII achieved a notable 3rd-place finish in the School J15 2nd VIII category. Meanwhile, the Girls’ Quad, rowing with limited time together, delivered a commendable effort to place 17th out of 32—a promising sign for future racing.
Heineken Cup Regatta
With barely time to catch their breath, the senior rowers boarded a plane from Heathrow and headed straight to Amsterdam to compete in the Heineken Cup Regatta, held over Saturday and Sunday.
The Heineken Cup Regatta is one of the Netherlands’ most distinctive and demanding multi‑distance rowing competitions. Crews race across four separate events—250 m, 750 m, 2,500 m, and 5,000 m—accumulating points based on speed to determine overall standings. The regatta routinely attracts a high‑calibre field, including Dutch national team athletes, top university programmes, and leading international clubs, offering a challenging and prestigious test early in the season. The Shiplake crews rose to the challenge superbly:
The Girls’ 1st VIII delivered one of the standout performances of the weekend, winning the U19 category by a commanding margin and placing 11th fastest women’s eight overall across the entire regatta.
The Boys’ 2nd VIII continued their strong form from the Schools’ Head, finishing 4th in the U19 eights, an impressive result against a deep European field.
The Boys’ 1st VIII experienced a quieter Saturday than expected, not quite hitting their usual standard. However, they turned this into motivation and produced an exceptional performance in the 5 km race, beating all competitors in their category and achieving the 8th fastest overall time of the day. Their competition included heavyweight crews such as the Dutch Men’s International Eight, Oxford University, Nereus, Thames Rowing Club, and several other elite line‑ups.
The Girls’ 2nd VIII also impressed, finishing 8th in their Senior Women’s Eights category, a strong achievement in a field of 22 established senior crews.
From historic victories on the Thames to high‑quality racing in Amsterdam, the weekend showcased not only Shiplake’s depth and competitiveness but also the spirit and resilience of the squad. With major regattas still to come, these performances set a powerful tone for the rest of the season.
RUGBY
U12As vs Berkhamsted U12Bs
This was a great game. Huge thanks to Berkhamsted for travelling with a really competitive team. There was lots of quality rugby on display: Berkhamsted were well organised and physical, but the U12As stepped up and the individual athleticism and drive of our players meant we created good opportunities and scored some well put together tries. Lots to learn still, but it was fantastic to play a fixture that was hard fought, with lots of strong tackling and rucking, and where all involved were clearly loving rugby.
Shiplake College 30 - 20 Berkhamsted
U12Bs vs Berkhamsted School U12Cs
All the boys involved in the Under 12B Team should be extremely proud of their performance. With only a small group of the final ten players available, it was always going to be a challenging fixture against a much larger and more powerful Berkhamsted side. Although we ultimately lost to a more experienced team, great credit goes to the Shiplake boys, who have grown in confidence and at times played some very positive rugby.
U13Bs vs Berkhamsted School Ds
The progress that these boys have made since January is extraordinary. Many began the term fearing any sort of contact, and here they were, tearing into the opposition, rucking with power and precision and running hard against opponents vastly more experienced. Stand out performances from Thomas Sales and Leonardo Marks, but there was huge commitment demonstrated by all 11 boys who wore the Shiplake shirt.
Shiplake College 40 – 40 Berkhamsted School
U14 Rugby 7s Tournament
The U14s 7s side had an amazing day over at Northampton School for Boys.
They played some outstanding 7s and came second in a great tournament against some big schools. A first run out for the side and they look to repeat their efforts this weekend at RGS 7s.

Shiplake College 22 – 12 Wellington College
Shiplake College 17 - 17 Sam Whitbread
Shiplake College 22 - 14 St Joseph
