Sports Report

In today's Sports Report, we catch up on the round of fixtures that took place before the half-term break. There were mixed results for our boys' football teams with plenty of goals all round, a comeback of dreams senior girls' netball, and a first fixture of 2024 for our U14 basketball boys. We also catch up on some rowing that took place over the half-term break where our senior rowers took part in the GB Junior Trials.

Basketball

U14 vs Little Heath School

In our first term competing in the Berkshire Schools Basketball League, the U14s finished 2nd in their group of 5. This put us into the 2nd place bracket across the four leagues to compete against the other 3 teams that finished 2nd in their group.

In our first fixture of the next stage, we took on Little Heath School and with a half-depleted squad due to injuries and unavailability, we knew it would be a tough contest. The first quarter was a very cagey affair with neither team really applying too much pressure and the teams came in level at 4-4. After a constructive team talk, the second quarter was a completely different story where Shiplake scored 8 points without reply. With the game now in our hands, Shiplake just had to manage the game which they did really well. Superb defence from S Cripps helped keep them at bay. Special mentions must go to Year 8 boys O Thorpe, A Palmer and J Fillipetto for playing a year up. Player of the Match went to S Cripps.

Boy’s 3rd XI vs Salesian College

An exciting game that was close all round. Everyone played well and Shiplake should have won but a catastrophic bit of bad luck led to the opposition’s first goal. Wonderful defensive screening by W Forster, D Elliott and J Read, with a sensational equaliser by Player of the Match M O’Brien.

Final score: Shiplake College 2-2 Salesian College

Boys’ U13B vs Cranford School

A convincing win by the U13Bs who played as a dynamic team from start to finish. The work ethic of every player was exemplary and there was plenty to celebrate: from the neat overlapping of H Woodward and H Williams on the right wing, to the positional play of J Filippetto and E Morgan. O Gilbart-Smith was a work horse in midfield ensuring the attackers were given plenty of the ball and he scored two unstoppable goals. There was panache finishing from hat-trick man W Webb who will be looking to do the same again in the next match and excellent positional play from C Craig and J Filippetto (fed by a beautiful cross by A Palmer) who tucked away their goals like pros. A Palmer had a sensational second half and came close to scoring what felt like a dozen times. He will be itching to get on the scoreboard in the next match. The back four were expertly flowing forward and back when needed and were stalwarts throughout the game and to end this enthralling match, J Filippetto hit the crossbar with a cracker of a strike.

Final score: Shiplake College 7-1 Cranford School
Coach: Mr S Gower

Boys’ U12A vs Cranford School

Final score: Shiplake College 6-2 Cranford School
Coach: Mr T Crisford

Boys’ U12B vs Cranford School

Shiplake started on the front foot and put on the early pressure. M Brown made a run on the left wing and G Denning only had to tap in the cross. Cranford were given no room and F Greenway pressed the defence, made an interception, and tucked away his first of the afternoon.  Minutes later, a A Brown free kick resulted in a defensive deflection that J Hunt tapped in. Second half was dominant with better passing. A Gern-Cross headed in a corner, F Greenway was finding space on the left wing and produced a great finish, with D Stewart and T Morgan also finding the back of the net. But F Greenway saved his best for his hat-trick goal that was blasted from outside the area over the futile defence.

Final score: Shiplake College 9-0 Cranford School

Netball

U18A vs Ranelagh

On Wednesday 7 February, the U18A netballers had a very tough game against Ranelagh. We arrived with high spirits and knew it would be a tough game but wanted to try and enjoy the match as much as possible! After a close first quarter, Shiplake found themselves only a few goals behind Ranelagh. However, they were able to pull the score away in the third quarter due to some great passes into their attacking end. Shiplake kept fighting until the end of the match, winning the final quarter by turning over 6 centre passes! There were some amazing tips and deflections from O Parkin, fabulous shooting from G Weedon, and great defensive pressure from E Dickson, F Lenthall and S Pendlebury. Shiplake managed to finish the game with a smile on their faces despite the 24-45 loss! Player of the Match went to O Parkin, Players’ Player to G Weedon, and Coach's Player to S Pendlebury.

U18B vs Holyport

On Wednesday 7 February, the Shiplake B team played Holyport. With Shiplake having the first centre, we were off to a quick start with amazing attacking from E Morris. At the end of the first quarter, Holyport were only one point ahead, however, they rapidly started gaining points and by half-time were winning 11-3. The Shiplake B team were filled with determination as they got back on court. With fabulous play from F Smith and A Flower, Holyport couldn’t keep up. As we entered the last 30 seconds, following an amazing comeback, Shiplake managed to score one final goal resulting in a win with astonishing shooting from L Shoenmakers and E O’Neil. The score ended 18-17 to Shiplake! Player of the Match went to A Flower, and Players’ Player & Coach's Player to F Smith.

U18C vs The Oratory

On Wednesday 7 February, Shiplake’s U18C netball team played a league match against The Oratory. Shiplake won the first centre pass which got the girls off to a great start. At the end of the first quarter, the score remained 0-0, but during the second quarter, Shiplake scored their first goal through E Flower. Unfortunately, Oratory scored 3 goals to go ahead of Shiplake. After a motivating half-time team talk, the girls were raring to go for the second half. Shiplake managed to mount a terrific comeback with great shooting from B Sauboua and E Flower leading to an 8-7 win for Shiplake. Player of the Match went to B Sauboua, Players’ Player to E Flower, and Coach’s Player to M Rider
