On Saturday 13 June, the sun shone for family, pupils and friends to make the most of the Parents’ Association Summer Family BBQ. Held on the lawn outside Skipwith, the event included a circus skills workshop, a dog show, a bar and a barbeque. The BBQ was to raise money for the PA and Millie’s Dream, a charity aiming to facilitate the purchase and installation of semi-automated defribrillators.
Whilst the barbeque, bar and cake stall received a healthy number of visitors, the highlight of the day came in the form of the dog show. Dogs of all shapes and sizes descended on the lawn to take part in the competition, entering categories such as ‘waggiest tail’ and ‘dog most like its owner.’ Spectators surrounded the judging arena, enjoying the spectacle of our four-legged friends showing off their most impressive tricks for the panel. Prizes included treats, rosettes and veterinary vouchers for the first place in each category.
The ergometer contest proved popular as well, even drawing eager viewers with little or no experience of rowing. Everett Housemaster Mr Tom Armstrong, along with pupils from his house, organised and ran the competition, which challenged people to row as far as they could in one minute in order to raise money for a local charity, Millie’s Dream. Local businesses had donated prizes, and the categories were split between age and gender. Over £180 was raised for the charity, which will go towards installing the potentially life-saving machines in schools.
Learning to spin plates, hoola hoop and juggle where just some of the circus skills on offer to children, along with penalty shootouts and sweet stands. Visitors to the BBQ were also treated to live performances from Music students. This was organised by Mr Paul Jones, and saw senior students Yeem Chanthanawan on the saxophone, Sam Ryder-Smith on the guitar, Eliska Zahorova on the piano, Tom Banks on the guitar and Ruaridh Sheppard singing.
The event was a smash success, bringing the school community together with family and friends to enjoy some old-fashioned village fete fun in the summer sun, and raise money for a very worthy cause.
