At Shiplake College, community has always been at the heart of everything we do. This academic year, that spirit has been on full display through Paws for Thought, a campaign that has brought together pupils, parents, staff, alumni and friends in support of something truly meaningful: the creation of a new, purpose-built Wellbeing Centre.

From the very first steps, to the vibrant celebrations and thoughtful gatherings since, the journey so far has been full of energy, generosity, and shared purpose. The campaign reached an exciting milestone over the Easter holidays as construction officially began on the new Wellbeing Centre. With the foundations carved out and the footprint now clearly visible, the project has moved from vision to reality. What was once an idea is now taking shape at the heart of the College. Designed to support both the physical and emotional wellbeing of Shiplake pupils, the Centre will provide modern, dedicated spaces for counselling, therapy, and pastoral care, ensuring every pupil can thrive. But while the diggers have been busy on site, the real foundations of this project have been laid by the community itself.

Throughout the year, a series of 'Paws' events have brought people together in memorable and meaningful ways. It began with the inaugural Wellbeing Day, where over 100 members of the community came together to explore the challenges facing young people today. From expert talks to practical workshops, the day captured the collaborative spirit of Shiplake, united by a shared commitment to wellbeing.
Soon after, the College community gathered again for the ever-popular Quiz Night. Teams battled it out over fish and chips and friendly competition, with plenty of laughter along the way - all in support of Paws for Thought.
Then came a more reflective ‘Paws’ for Reading, as Headmaster Mr Tyrone Howe welcomed author and parent Lauren Schott for a special book launch event. Guests enjoyed an evening of conversation and storytelling, while raising funds for the campaign.
The spirit of generosity continued at the Headmaster’s Dinner, where guests came together for an evening of warmth and shared purpose, further strengthening the sense of collective commitment to the project.
And most recently, Founder’s Day brought colour to the campaign. With the introduction of our first-ever Colour Run, pupils embraced the joy (and mess!) of the occasion, marking a vibrant moment in the school calendar while contributing to the campaign. It was a perfect reflection of Shiplake at its best: energetic, inclusive, and full of life.

None of this would have been possible without the incredible generosity of the Shiplake community. Every ticket purchased, every event attended, and every contribution made has helped move the Wellbeing Centre closer to completion. We are also hugely grateful to Rupert Fawcett, whose wonderful illustrations have added a unique and playful dimension to the campaign, reminding us that even the most serious causes can be approached with warmth and creativity.

There is one more key date in the calendar - the Paws for Thought Summer Ball. Set to be a highlight of the year, this promises to be a fantastic evening, with all profits from tickets going directly to the campaign. It will be a fitting celebration of everything achieved so far.

While much has been achieved, there is still more to do and there are wonderful opportunities for the community to leave a lasting legacy. Through the Buy a Brick campaign, families can play a direct role in shaping the Wellbeing Centre. Supporters can choose to sponsor a Foundation Brick (£1,000) or a Path to Wellbeing Brick (£250), each engraved with a family name, creating a permanent connection to a space that will support generations of Shiplake pupils.

Paws for Thought has always been about more than just fundraising. It is about community, care, and creating something that will have a lasting impact on every pupil who walks through Shiplake’s doors. If you would like to support the campaign, whether through attending events, purchasing a brick, or making a donation, you can find more details on the Paws for Thought campaign page. Together, we have already achieved so much. With your continued support, we can ensure that the Wellbeing Centre becomes a space that truly reflects the values of Shiplake College: inclusive, individual, inspirational.
