We've had a fantastic turn-out at our scholar talks for the last two Masterclass Mondays. Scholars, non-scholars and staff alike are all very welcome to attend the talks which are always interesting, inspirational and generate lots of questions.

Master of Scholars, Mr Woolner, provides this round up:

Monday 8 November 2021

Our largest audience to date, including many non-scholars, joined us on 8 November to hear two talks about life-saving technology.

Benjamin Zacharias, Year 11 academic scholar, intrigued the audience with his exploration of the development of safety features in Formula 1. His well-researched and referenced talk left those present with the unnerving fact that they were more likely to be killed by a cow than in an F1 car.

Matthew Grundy, Year 12 STEM scholar, provided an optimistic window into the future possibilities surrounding cancer cures. His witty and erudite delivery, as well as his confident grasp and explanation of the science, made this a very accessible presentation for all audience members.

Monday 22 November

The penultimate Masterclass of the Autumn Term asked questions of identity and our place in the universe.

Richard Wang, Year 12 music and academic scholar, asked the audience to consider their own importance with his explanation of deep time; the 4.6 billion years the earth has existed, compared to the 200,000 years of human life. Though one might have left his talk feeling insignificant, his wonderful response to this, that we grow more meaningful with every life we positively impact, did quite the opposite, providing inspiration to all. A true embodiment of our Exemplum Docet motto.

Filling in for a scholar who was unwell, Mr Woolner reprised a talk delivered via video during the lockdown at the start of the year. Is Bruce Banner responsible for the actions of the Hulk?
