On Wednesday 20 May, Shiplake College hosted the final Scholars’ Masterclass of the academic year, welcoming Julia Hardy JP for an engaging and informative talk on her role within the local magistrates’ court.

Julia provided students with a clear and accessible overview of the criminal justice system, demystifying its processes and structures. She thoughtfully explained the distinctions between magistrates’ courts, the Crown Court, and civil courts, helping students to understand how different cases are handled within the legal system. The session also offered students the opportunity to ask questions, and Julia responded with clarity and depth. Topics ranged from how sentences are determined to what typically happens in various cases. Through practical examples and insightful explanations, she brought key legal concepts to life, sparking interest among those considering a future in law or public service.

The talk was both enlightening and engaging, offering valuable insight into the workings of the justice system and the responsibilities of those who serve within it. We are very grateful to Julia for giving her time to speak with our students and contribute to their academic enrichment. This event marks the conclusion of another excellent Scholars’ Masterclass series, which has once again provided students with the opportunity to learn from experienced professionals across a range of fields.
