At the start of the term, our Scholars gathered for a special assembly led by the Master of Scholars, Mr Joe Player, who set out his vision and expectations for the year ahead.
Our Scholars form part of the Exemplum Docet Society - named after the College motto, meaning ‘the example teaches.’ The society brings together pupils who have been awarded scholarships in recognition of their exceptional talent, whether academic, sporting, or artistic. These merit-based awards are designed not only to celebrate excellence, but also to nurture and develop each pupil’s potential.
Scholars are expected to lead by example, maintaining the highest standards of commitment, behaviour, and contribution both within and beyond their specialist fields. Their progress is closely monitored, and they benefit from a range of enrichment opportunities including trips, guest speakers, and access to competitions that further enhance their learning and experience.
Around campus, scholars are recognised by their distinctive Scholars’ badges, a symbol of the responsibility they carry to inspire others through their example.
This year, we are also delighted to introduce our Head Scholars, who will play a key role in representing the society and supporting fellow Scholars. These will be E Young, who is an Art Scholar, and Zac Powell, who is an Academic Scholar.
Speaking on being a Scholar, E Young says:
‘Scholars represent the best of the College, and we are role models to other pupils through strong worth ethic and a positive attitude towards things they are involved in. As a Scholar, it’s important to demonstrate academic perseverance but, just as importantly, the ethos of the school: kindness.’
Isaac Powell adds:
‘A scholar at Shiplake is someone who is curious, eager to learn, and ready to dive into any task with enthusiasm. Scholars are the people who don't just achieve highly but also help those in their chosen field.’
