Sports Report

In today's Sports Report, we catch up on the latest round of football fixtures that took place before the Exeat weekend including a strong performance from our senior girls. The girls were also in action on the netball court with many positive results and in basketball, there was a first ever home match for our U13 boys. In rowing, our senior girls put in an extremely strong performance at the Women’s Eights Head of the River Race, which bodes well for the upcoming season.

Basketball

Our newly formed U13 basketball team took on Bohunt School in their first ever basketball fixture at Shiplake College. It was a really fast paced and exciting match between two very strong sides but Bohunt, who have already played several games, ran out worthy winners. With more matches together, this team will definitely be a force to be reckoned with. Player of the Match went to L Waldegrave who also scored the side’s most points. Final score was 10-21 to Bohunt.

Girls’ 1st XI vs Wellington College

Last week, the Year 13 footballers took to the pitch for their match against Wellington College. After having a number of training sessions and matches cancelled due to the unfortunate weather, it was great to get playing again and with the sun shining! Wellington got us underway and Shiplake were hot on the defence from the start.  Despite most of the first half being played in our defensive half, Wellington only managed to gain one goal - a testament to our strong defence from L Schoenmakers, G Weedon, E Bell and L Price. G Wyndham Smyth in midfield was exceptional in her role and gave Shiplake the opportunity to gain back possession of the ball but unfortunately, no goal was scored for Shiplake in the first half.

Going into the second half, Shiplake were eager for a goal to equalise. The ball was played in our attacking half much more and it was only a matter of time before S McDavid took a chance from afar and, impressively, got Shiplake a goal. This helped pick up the morale on the pitch and with a few more minutes left of the match, both Shiplake and Wellington fought to the end to have another chance to win. The whistle blew and the final score was 1-1. Well done to all girls who took part in the match, and a big thank you to Mr Cooper for refereeing and Miss James for the support and making it all happen!

Girls’ U18A vs Reddam House

On Wednesday 6 March, the Shiplake U18A netballers had their last league match of the season against Reddam House. We knew from the get-go that this match was going to be tough, but we were beyond keen to secure a win for our very last game of the season. Shiplake had a depleted squad of only 8 players, so we knew we needed to put in a whole squad effort if we were to get the win. After the first quarter, we were up by 9-8, which was very close! In the second quarter, we managed to extend our lead with some fabulous drives made by O Parkin who connected with T Gillard to get the ball to G Weedon to slot in the goals. Some amazing defensive efforts from F Lenthall and S Ferguson helped turn over lots of balls down the court. Shiplake managed to secure the win with an impressive 53-34 scoreline! An amazing end to the season with the best team! Well played everyone, so proud of you all!

Player of the Match was S Pendlebury, Players’ Player went to T Gillard, and Coach's Players went to O Parkin and A Botterill.

Girls’ U18B vs The Oratory School

Last week, Shiplake’s Netball U18B team took on Oratory A. Shiplake took the first centre pass and with a quick attack from L Schnoenmakers and E Morris, Shiplake took the lead. As half-time approached, Oratory A took the lead, even with great defence from F Short and L Price. Shiplake kept high spirits for the second half with amazing shooting from E O’Neill and M Spooner which was helped with perfect passes from D Knight and E Bell. Even though The Oratory were winning, Shiplake were still sharp on the ball. With the final score being 29-9. Shiplake B were very proud of their final league match of this netball season.

Player of the Match went to E Morris, Players’ Player was L Price, and Coach's Player was R Acton.

Girls’ U18C vs Reddam House

On Wednesday 6 March, the U18C netballers played their final league match of the season against Reddam U18Bs. The match began with a Reddam centre pass, which was quickly turned over to Shiplake through the help of I Davenport-Thomas in wing defence who made amazing interceptions. The first goal of the match was then scored by I Syms. At the end of the first quarter Shiplake were in the lead, but during the second quarter, Reddam started to get ahead despite a strong defence from M Rider and S Bathe-Taylor. Half-time came and Shiplake were down 2-7. The girls went into the second half with a strong mindset to try and win the game back. Unfortunately, the second half ended with the final score being 16-3 to Reddam. Despite this unlucky loss, the girls had an amazing season with massive improvements made throughout the team.

Player of the Match was E Flower, Players’ Player went to I Davenport-Thomas, and Coach’s Player went to I Davenport-Thomas.

Rowing – Women’s Eights Head of the River Race 2024

On Saturday 9 March, our senior girls were in action at the Women’s Eights Head of the River Race in London. They completed a timed run over 6.8km against hundreds of other crews ranging from rowing clubs to universities. Our VIII did amazingly and came 23rd overall out of 326 and 3rd in the school/junior category. These are encouraging signs as we look to put in a strong performance in next week's Schools' Head of the River.

Well done to the following who did a fantastic job of representing - A Merritt, Katie Proudlove, A Parker, Sophia Foreman, Amelia Westbrook, Emily Downing, Emily Over, and Lara Vahlé.
