On Wednesday 3 September, Shiplake College gathered together for the first Whole School Assembly of the new academic year, as pupils and staff – both new and returning – marked the official start of term. For those in Years 8, 10, 11, and 13, it was their first day back, while pupils in Years 7, 9, and 12 had already enjoyed a busy induction day the day before.

That induction, held on Tuesday 2 September, gave all new pupils in Years 7, 9, and 12 the chance to settle in, meet their teachers and classmates, and take part in a carousel of presentations and activities. A highlight for Year 7 was completing the famous Shiplake Capsize Test – a milestone moment, made even more memorable as the Headmaster, Mr Howe, led by example and took the plunge first.

Year 9 pupils rounded off their day with an energetic mix of softball, netball, dodgeball, and climbing, while Year 13 Prefects and Chapel Wardens were on hand throughout to guide tours, welcome new faces, and help run activities.

As the whole College came together the following morning, Mr Howe addressed the 583 pupils now on roll. Entering his seventh year as Headmaster, he reaffirmed the importance of the College’s core values – Inclusive, Individual, Inspirational – and reminded pupils of the grit and determination needed to achieve great things.

Deputy Head (Academic), Mr Jones, also spoke, outlining the routines for learning and the timetable structure, before the Assembly reflected on the outstanding achievements of Shiplake rowers over the summer – most notably, the boys’ eight winning Henley Royal Regatta and further international success representing Team GB.

The Assembly closed with a hymn sung in unison, as the College looked ahead with optimism and excitement to all that the year will bring.
